2 FLEG as a Source of Knowledge, Dialogue, Communication and Voice (Objective 1) – IUCN Communications Strategy and Work Plan developed; E-Newsletter – an AGORA for knowledge and information sharing – launched in Armenia and disseminated via national and regional networks (REC Caucasus and CENN reaching out 16,000 subscribers); ENPI FLEG Program highlighted live by a national radio and http://hello-europe.info ENPI FLEG Armenia team hosted by HAYANTAR and agreed joint priority actions (open dialogue) Sustainable Forest Management and Improved Livelihoods (Objective 1) – WWF, co-funded by a local NGO Pilot project on local livelihood improvement and alternative use of forest resources launched in Dsegh (creation of a Visitor Center, nature trails, workplaces (opportunities for local guides, sale of local products & handcrafts, engaging leading tour agencies).

3 Private Sector Initiatives (WWF) (Objective 2) Task: Create 1 st Private Sector Association in Armenia Goal: to facilitate immersion of the otherwise illegal wood processing operations into a legal field and create safety net for credible and socially responsible operations. Increasing National Capacity (Objective 3) - WWF Two Forest Sanctuaries were assessed in terms of management effectiveness. Specific proposals to control illegal activities made to HAYANTAR in relation to: (a) legal use of forest resources (revising the Forest and PA legislation, developing legislative acts for sancturaies, types of acceptable forest use activities and tourism activities and certain restrictions, etc.) (b) management improvement (developing management plans, GIS mapping and demarcation of boundaries, regular monitoring) (c) capacity building (training of qualified staff, increasing resources, raising public awareness, etc.)

4 KAP - Knowledge, Awareness, Perceptions (Objective 1) – IUCN Provide information about the present KAP regarding illegal logging; Identify most appropriate communication channels, Test the degree of community solidarity and the ties with the authorities Coverage: 8 communities in 3 Large Forested Regions, clustered per Good, Average and Poor living standards Total: 24 discussions, 133 individuals interviewed across country Key messages and slogans tested under this study will be used throughout communication campaign (posters, PSAs, booklets) What’s ahead? Illegal logging study: socio-economic impact on rural populations Task split between WB and IUCN: WB hired international experts to design the survey methodology and deferred to Sep - Oct to capture maximum incidence of illegal logging cases Curriculum development and implementation Integrate FLEG in the academic curricula of the Armenian State Agrarian University
