3 Caps Can you give some examples of a cap? Bottle Pen Baseball Salary What is a salary cap? An agreement or rule that places a limit on the amount of money that a team can spend on player salaries. It can exist per player or as a total limit for the team roster. This ensures that a wealthy team cannot dominate the league.

4 Salary Caps What is the difference between a hard and soft salary cap? Hard Cap: A maximum amount that cannot be exceeded for any reason. Violators face the voiding of contracts, striping of championships and other potential penalties. Soft Cap: A maximum amount that may be exceeded in limited circumstances. Doing so will most likely cause a financial penalty which is known in advance. Which leagues have a hard cap? NFL NHL Which leagues have a soft cap? MLB NBA MLS

5 NFL Salary Cap How is the NFL Salary Cap calculated? It has a lot of elements involved, but a basic formula can be derived as: 55% of League Media (regular season games) + 45% NFL Ventures/Postseason + 40% Local (preseason games) – 47.5% of the Joint Contribution Amount (Projected League-wide benefits) The resulting number is then divided evenly among the 32 teams to achieve the NFL Salary Cap. What is the current NFL Salary Cap? $133 million! That’s $133,000,000 per team! If that big formula added up to be $3.68 billion, what would each team’s salary cap be? Since each team has a cap of $133 million, what does the big formula add up to be?

6 NFL Salary Cap League Media = $4.5 billion NFL Ventures = $5.4 billion Local = $1.25 billion Joint Contribution Amount = $1 billion Homework: Complete Worksheet
