4 Overview In our study of Statistical Process Control (SPC), we have come to understand that defects (or variation) occur in work processes. We use SPC tools to gather data and gain an understanding of the causes of variation. We then use this knowledge to develop corrective actions to reduce or eliminate the defects and sustain the improvements through the life of the production cycle of the product. 4 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2013. 5 Purpose of Gantt Charts A Gantt Chart is used to track the primary activities on a project. This SPC tool gives SPC team members and other interested parties the capacity to understand how the key objectives of the project are progressing over time. The primary activities of a project are listed on a chart in relationship to a horizontal timeline. As each task is started and completed, the timeline is highlighted to indicate the real-time status of the activity. 5 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2013. All rights reserved.
