4 History of Metalworking Since ancient times mankind has valued the use of metal. As we evolved from the stone age, our ancestors found that metals like copper, bronze, and iron were more durable than stones and wood. Through our interaction with other cultures, the knowledge of steelmaking was spread abroad, forever changing the art of tool making, weapons and warfare. 4 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2012. 5 History of Metalworking For centuries tools and weapons were custom made individually, by hand, by skilled craftsmen. However, during the industrial revolution inventors found ways to create metal tools and weapons in factories, through mass production. Now, in the 21 st century, metalworking has evolved into a precise computer controlled process, limited only by our imaginations. 5 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2012. All rights reserved.

6 Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machines CNC machines combine the functions of several metalworking tools to give the operator the ability to literally carve and shape items like metal, wood or plastic.
