CCIC What?!?!?!

What is the CCIC strategy? The CCIC strategy is an easy way to help you write short answer responses. It is a formula for writing.

What does CCIC stand for? C: Claim C: Cite I: Interpret C: Connect When I use all 4 of these the right way, I will have a great writing piece!

How do I write a Claim? A claim is a sentence telling what your writing will be about. A good claim “snaps” the question that is being asked and then answers the question. Here are some examples of snapping the question: – Example 1: What do you think the word ‘boasting’ means in this context? – SNAPIT:_____________________________________ ____________________________________________

Here is another example… Example 2: How does this quote show how Lupe’s feelings have changed since the beginning of the book? Snapit:________________________________ _____________________________________

Now, here are examples of a claim with the snap and the answer! Example 1: What do you think the word ‘boasting’ means in this context? Claim:________________________________ _____________________________________ _____________________________________ _____________________________________

Another example of a claim… Example 2: How does this quote show how Lupe’s feelings have changed since the beginning of the book? Claim:________________________________ _____________________________________ _____________________________________ _____________________________________

Your Turn! Snap and answer (also known as – make a claim) each question. 1. What is the weather like in the summer? – The weather in the summer is warm. 2. What color is Mrs. Paglia’s shirt? – Mrs. Paglia is wearing a __________ colored shirt. 3. How do you get to school? – I get to school by riding the bus.

What is second C? Cite Cite is another word for evidence or direct quotes. These are usually quotes that are word for word taken straight from the text that show your claim is right. If your claim is not about something written, you should use concrete facts like direct quotes from a person, the speech, or whatever you have seen or heard. You always need to use quotation marks “ ” when citing a piece of evidence from any source.

Underline where the author cited evidence in the example below. Example 1: – Prompt: Choose one person who is alive today or was alive at one point in time that you would like to sit down and talk with over a cup of tea. – A person I would like to have tea with is my Uncle Marty. Uncle Marty fought in World War II as a pilot. This shows that he loved his country and was someone who had a lot of courage. My Uncle Marty earned a purple heart because he was shot in the leg. This shows that my Uncle Marty was very brave and a strong person. Uncle Marty is someone I would like to have tea with because he showed a lot of qualities that I would like to have and would want to know more about.

Underline where the author cited evidence in the example below. – EXAMPLE 2: – Prompt: Based on your reading, how does Devon feel about going to school? Cite two pieces of evidence to support your answer. – Devon is very nervous about going to school. I know this because he told me “I won’t fit in.” This shows that Devon is worried about what other people will think of him. Devon tried to stay home from school today. This shows that he did not want to go to school because he was feeling nervous. These examples show that Devon was nervous about going to school.

What is Interpretation? Interpretation is a sentence that explains the proof or evidence you just cited. It is your connection to the concrete details. Many times when we write our interpretation, we start with the words, this shows that. This helps us make the connection to the text and the claim.

Underline the interpretation in the examples below. – EXAMPLE 1: A person I would like to have tea with is my Uncle Marty.

The last C stands for connect! Your last sentence in your paragraph, usually known as a conclusion, should have information from your paragraph and somehow say what is in your claim again. You should make an inference that ties all of your evidence back to your claim.

Underline the connection or conclusion sentence in the examples below. EXAMPLE 1: Prompt: Choose one person who is alive today or was alive at one point in time that you would like to sit down and talk with over a cup of tea. A person I would like to have tea with is my Uncle Marty.

Underline the connection or conclusion sentence in the examples below. EXAMPLE 2: Prompt: Based on your reading, how does Devon feel about going to school? Cite two pieces of evidence to support your answer. Devon is very nervous about going to school. I know this because he told me “I won’t fit in”. This shows that Devon is worried about what other people will think of him. Devon tried to stay home from school today. This shows that he did not want to go to school because he was feeling nervous. These examples show that Devon was nervous about going to school.

Oh yeah, and I forgot to mention… By writing the strategy on the side of your paper as soon as you see a short answer response question on a test, you will be able to answer the question correctly!
