“But we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you withdraw from every brother who walks disorderly and not according to the tradition which he received from us” (2 Thessalonians 3:6)

FACTS brethren can fall from grace and begin living worldly lives brethren are to look out for those who may be slipping we are commanded to walk according to apostolic tradition we must withdraw from the disorderly

LAW OF Inclusion & Exclusion Admitted by Christ –Hear (Rom. 10:17) –Believe (Jn. 3:16) –Repent (Lk. 13:3) –Confess (Acts 8:37) –Be baptized (Acts 2:38) *Admittance Excluded from Christ –Sin without repentance (2 Thess. 3:6; Matt. 18:17; etc.) *Withdrawal

2 Essential Kinds of Teaching “What do you want? Shall I come to you with a rod, or in love and a spirit of gentleness?” (1 Cor. 4:21)

DISCIPLINE INSTRUCTION & CORRECTION PUNISHMENT ‘to open their eyes, in order to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in Me.’ (ACTS 26:18; 2 TIM. 4:2-5) TITUS 3:10, 11 1 TIMOTHY 1:19, 20 2 CORINTHIANS 2:6 “Now we exhort you, brethren, warn those who are unruly, comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak, be patient with all.” -1 THESSALONIANS 5:14

TITUS 3:10, 11 THERE IS A TIME TO ‘REJECT’ ONE WHEN THEY ARE ‘DIVISIVE’ THEY MUST BE –ADMONISHED (INSTRUCTED) –REJECTED (PUNISHED) IF THEY SEEK NOT REPENTANCE 10 Reject a divisive man after the first and second admonition, 11 knowing that such a person is warped and sinning, being self-condemned.

TITUS 3:10, 11 WHY REJECT ONE? –HE IS WARPED “TURNED INSIDE OUT” –SINNING: MISSING THE MARK, WANDERING AWAY FROM GOD’S LAW –SELF-CONDEMNED “CONDEMNED OF HIMSELF” (KJV) 10 Reject a divisive man after the first and second admonition, 11 knowing that such a person is warped and sinning, being self-condemned.

TITUS 3:10, 11 IF A BROTHER REJECTS ‘THE FAITH,’ THEN HE MUST IN TURN BE REJECTED NOTE: PATTERN HERE DIFFERENT THAN MATTHEW 18:15-17 10 Reject a divisive man after the first and second admonition, 11 knowing that such a person is warped and sinning, being self-condemned.

DIFFERENT PATTERN FOR DIFFERENT SITUATIONS PERSONAL PRIVATE SINS REQUIRE THREE WARNINGS 15 "Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother. 16 "But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that ‘by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.’ 17 "And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector. 3 warnings

10 As for a man who is factious, after admonishing him once or twice, have nothing more to do with him, 11 knowing that such a person is perverted and sinful; he is self- condemned. (TITUS 3:10, 11; RSV)

punishment was given inflicted by the majority was sufficient “This punishment which was inflicted by the majority is sufficient for such a man”

1 CORINTHIANS 5:1, 2 1 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and such sexual immorality as is not even named among the Gentiles— that a man has his father’s wife! 2 And you are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he who has done this deed might be taken away from among you. THE INDIVIDUAL’S SIN THE CHURCH’S SIN THE CHURCH’S TASK

CORINTH’S TASK ELABORATED 1 CORINTHIANS 5:3-7 3 For I indeed, as absent in body but present in spirit, have already judged (as though I were present) him who has so done this deed. 4 In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when you are gathered together, along with my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, 5 deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. 6 Your glorying is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? 7 Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump,

Discipline keeps the church pure –“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light” (Eph. 5:8) is done because of concern for the soul perishing in sin –“... for the destruction of the flesh, that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus” (1 Cor. 5:5) is done to obey the Lord

Our Specific Responsibilities Toward the Disorderly

“Mourn” 1 CORINTHIANS 5:2 1 CORINTHIANS 5:2 “And you are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he who has done this deed might be taken away from among you.”

Socially Ostracize 1 CORINTHIANS 5: 1 CORINTHIANS 5: 9 I wrote to you in my epistle not to keep company with sexually immoral people. 10 Yet I certainly did not mean with the sexually immoral people of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. 11 But now I have written to you not to keep company with anyone named a brother, who is sexually immoral, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner—not even to eat with such a person.

Do Not Regard Such As An Enemy 2 THESSALONIANS 3 14 And if anyone does not obey our word in this epistle, note that person and do not keep company with him, that he may be ashamed. 15 Yet do not count him as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.

Continue To Admonish 2 THESSALONIANS 3:15: “Yet do not count him as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.”

Remember NO ONE IS IMMUNE TO SIN –“But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified” (1 Cor. 9:27) –“You have become estranged from Christ...you have fallen from grace” (Gal. 5:4) –“Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God” (Heb. 3:12)

Reclaiming & Restoring Galatians 6:1 “Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted.” ‘caught’ (marg.) repair, strengthen mild, meek self-examination WHO? sin

THE SPIRITUAL (GAL. 6:1) are concerned about those overtaken in sin walk according to the Spirit (Gal. 5:25) described as people of love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kind, good, faithful, gentle and self-controlled they are not conceited, or full of hypocrisy who provoke others to sin; they are not envious
