1. WELCOME PARENTS TO PRE-AP PHYSICAL SCIENCE!!!

2. Let me introduce myself…  Mrs. Julie Barrette  Have taught PHYSICAL SCIENCE for 12 years here at HV  I love teaching Science !

3. What is Physical Science? Physical Science is the study of physics (energy) and chemistry (matter) and how the two branches are related. *SOL checklists are available to pick up on your way out.

4. HOW CAN YOU HELP YOUR CHILD BE SUCCESSFUL IN THIS CLASS? Help them be prepared for class. Check their planner at night. Check my website occasionally for assignments and updates. We will eventually be switching over to Blackboard, but for now we are using this website (is available through HMVS website): www.schoolrack.com/jbarrette

5. PRE-AP Science is different because…  Students will be given more writing and exercises that require lots of critical thinking.  Students are required to build and complete a RUBE GOLDBERG project. A Rube Goldberg Machine is an overly-complicated machine that completes a simple task. (This year’s objective is to incorporate chemistry by choosing one element to feature in their project. The final step should perform an action that demonstrates how the element is used in our everyday lives.)

6. How Can You Help With This Project? Look over the “Rube Goldberg Machine Booklet” (This was sent home yesterday.) This has all the information and due dates for this project. In fact, your child will need to discuss the booklet with you in detail. Please CAREFULLY consider whether or not you want your child to have a partner from their class. (This is a VERY important decision.) Please sign and return the “Parental Consent Form” which is due by this THURSDAY, September 23rd. 7. Other ways to help your child…  Contact me if you have any questions or concerns. The BEST way to reach me w/ general questions: 1) email jbarrette@rcs.k12.va.us (this can bejbarrette@rcs.k12.va.us accessed through the school webpage) OR 2) call and leave me a message at school and I’ll get back to you (esp. with personal questions).  Encourage your child to communicate with me if he or she needs extra help understanding concepts learned in class. I offer before school help sessions every morning. They just need to let me know! Also, there will be a review session in the morning before school on the day of a test.
