2 RAEng Research Fellowships Support for high-quality engineers who are developing their interests in academic research as a stepping stone to a successful research career Encourages the best researchers to remain in the academic engineering sector Aimed at researchers who have up to three years postdoctoral research experience About 10+ fellowships per year, provides funding for five years Focus is on basic research in any field of engineering Provides a mentor (Fellow of The Academy) to offer advice and to facilitate industrial links as the research progresses Closing date 31 October 12 Institutional limit for Imperial is usually 3 applications each year, so there is an internal selection process managed by Faculty of Engineering http://www.raeng.org.uk/research/researcher/postdoc/

3 University Research Fellowships Aimed at outstanding scientists in the UK at an early to mid-stage of their career (3 to 8 years since PhD) who have the potential to become leaders in their field Approx 30-40 fellowships per year, highly competitive (7.6% success rate!) The scheme provides the opportunity to build an independent research career - expected to be strong candidates for permanent posts at end of fellowship The scheme covers all areas of the life and physical sciences, including engineering, but excluding clinical medicine Eligibility: need to be EEA or Swiss citizen and not hold a permanent academic post Closing date: September; results in May 5 years funding covering salary plus estates and indirect costs (FEC) http://royalsociety.org/grants/schemes/university-research/

4 EPSRC Fellowships EPSRC award fellowships for three career stages: postdoc, early career and established career No edibility rules based on years of postdoc experience or type of position held. No deadlines, but note FoE internal deadlines. Postdoc fellows need to have gained their PhD by start of fellowship Need to fit ‘person specification’ for relevant career stage Postdoc fellowships are NOT available for Engineering, Manufacturing the Future and ICT thematic areas. Physical sciences, Energy themes and Complexity Science area do support postdoc fellowships. 6 Marie Curie Actions (FP7) International Outgoing Fellowships for Career Development Purpose: significantly develop and widen your competences, strengthen your multi- or interdisciplinary expertise, provide inter-sectoral experience and complementary skills Need to agree personal career development plan with home institution supervisor Eligibility: - Nationals of EU Member States and Associated Countries (or from Other Third Countries and resident in EU for at least 5 years) -Either a doctoral degree or at least 4 years' full-time equivalent research experience Covers salary for 3 years, 1-2 years in Third Country, 1 year in EU member state (must return to EU member state) Next deadline: 16 August 2012 http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/people

7 Wellcome Trust Sir Henry Wellcome Postdoctoral Fellowships Candidates will be expected to identify an important biomedical research question and to develop and deliver a personal programme to achieve their research aims four year fellowships (full or part time) You must be in the final year of your PhD studies or have no more than one year of postdoctoral research experience Need sponsor AND mentor from host institution Wellcome Trust-MIT Postdoctoral Fellowships Four years’ support for recently qualified postdoctoral researchers to gain experience of research at the interfaces between biology/medicine and mathematics, engineering, computer, physical or chemical sciences. Spend time at MIT then return to UK institution Need MIT sponsor and mentor at home institution Deadline: 4 June 2012

8 Interdisciplinary Research Leverhulme Trust – Early Career Fellowships Any discipline but Trust favours research that would not be supported by other funders and outstanding personal talent applied to benefit of wider community Provides 50% salary up to £23k plus £6k research costs Normally 3 years Annual call Human Frontier Science Programme Cross-disciplinary Fellowships Brain function research, biological functions thorough molecular approaches Postdoc experience 1 year

9 Junior Research Fellowships Aim to attract future research leaders to Imperial Three-year fellowships, which include salary, research expenses Mentoring support from a senior Imperial academic Gives freedom to focus on their research, with no obligatory teaching or administration Helps researchers make the leap from post-doc to lecturer About 20 fellowships per year Deadline for applications: 30 October each year Fellowships start at beginning of following academic year JRFs from 2012 intake
