Vision / what we want  Flexible, student-centric learning trajectories  The teacher being able to choose the best learning materials – no lock-in to the textbooks, but leveraging the textbooks  Schoolmanagement can negotiate to get the best learning materials for the best price ES SIG wg 01-03-2012

After EDRENE / The Hague + Poitiers  We thought to have a (then) vague plan  We continued the road we foresaw …….  We become more en more convinced this is the plan … and it becomes more and more clear ES SIG wg 01-03-2012

+ + 5 ingredients to flexibilise the curriculum + +

1.Framework of educational concepts 2.Detailed curriculum concepts => backbone of textbooks / (open) learning lines 3.Linked data-technology 4.Mixing open content / textbooks 5.‘Business models’ for publishers, schools, teachers ES SIG wg 01-03-2012

Presentations from NL  On the Dutch Framework of educational concepts (Henk)  (detailed) Curriculum as backbone for the selection of learning materials (Allard)  Mixing open content & publisher’s textbooks (Leonie)  Business cases (Henk)  Linked data-beta experiments ES SIG wg 01-03-2012

Framework of educational concepts - curriculum in the Dutch clouds Kennisnet (EDRENE – May 2012) Henk Nijstad, Kennisnet

Agenda  What is this Framework  Why do you want it?  What does it have to do with our current services like Edurep?  What does it contain? Kennisnet (ECK) Klantendag 12 april 2012

Synonyms Framework of educational concepts  ‘FEC’ Onderwijs Begrippenkader  OBK Kennisnet (ECK) Klantendag 12 april 2012

Message of this presentation: This framework of concepts (‘FEC’)  forms the new basis for vocabularies to tag & find learning objects  Provides a solution for existing bottlenecks with metadata: durable metadata  Enables the next step towards creating (semi- ) automatic metadata Kennisnet (ECK) Klantendag 12 april 2012

Metadata: the gasoline for our Kennisnet- services like Edurep Kennisnet (ECK) Klantendag 12 april 2012

Metadata: Achilles heel  Far too little metadata  Good quality (curriculum-relation) ?  Who adds the metadata –Expensive! –Expertise!  Versioning / problems with durability Kennisnet (ECK) Klantendag 12 april 2012

 Same concepts have in different vocabulaires a different name, can not be related Nederlandse taal Nederlands taal ? The same? Examples of problems with metadata: 1. unambiguous of concepts Kennisnet (ECK) Klantendag 12 april 2012

Examples of problems with metadata: 2. Frequent (yearly) changes in vocabulaires (because of politics / law) Term 1 4 5 2 3 6  Often only a few terms change  However the complete vocabulaire should be replaced  mapping needed  Every tool (search portal ánd repository) should change to this new vocabulaire 1 4 5” 2 3 20092010 Kennisnet (ECK) Klantendag 12 april 2012 Term 6

We should find a smarter way … we need the next step! The framework of educational concepts!! Kennisnet (ECK) Klantendag 12 april 2012

Framework of Educational Concepts (‘FEC’) All terms and their mutually relations needed to describe education, to start with the curriculum  Every terms carefully decomposed (Atomise)  Unambiguous described(Harmonise)  Rich described(Describe)  Relations between terms (Relate) Kennisnet (ECK) Klantendag 12 april 2012

What kind of concepts can be found in the FEC? Curriculum descriptions / terms!  Subjects / learning domains  Learning level (f.e. European framework of reference  Learning objectives  Detailed achievement standards:  Secundary & vocational  (detail) competencies and skills  ….

We were inspired by international developments Peer-countries like:  USA: Achievement Standards Network  Sweden: ‘Curriculum in the Cloud’  France  EUN

Right now in The Nederlands  ‘Framework’ is controlled by EduStandaard –Open procedure, broad support  May 10th the Framework will be filled with the first sets (vocabulaires)  Kennisnet-services like Edurep and MetaPlus will be FEC-proof before the summer (‘FEC- based vocabulaires’ ES SIG wg 01-03-2012

Why is the Framework a smart idea?

Nederlandse taal Nederlands taal Why is the Framework a smart idea? 1. The same terms get 1 unique id 3 denotations1 Unique, durable id Id. = 12skr56789

Why is the Framework a smart idea? 2. Changes in vocabularies 1 4 5 2 3 6  Only changing terms need to be replaced, not the complete vocabulary  Durability guaranteed because of the relation 1 4 5” 2 3 6 20092010

 Framework in combination with Linked Data- technology enables (semi-) automatically adding metadata Why is the Framework a smart idea? Kennisnet (ECK) Klantendag 12 april 2012

Besides findability of learning materials there are lots of applications  Enrichment of the curriculum  Accountability  Individual learning lines  Continuous leerning paths  Benchmarking Kennisnet (ECK) Klantendag 12 april 2012

In summary:  The Framework of educational concepts: –Offers solutions for current bottlenecks with metadata –Enables semi-automatically adding metadata….. And other applications  Important current metadata (Edurep etc) seamleslly fits to this new way of working Kennisnet (ECK) Klantendag 12 april 2012
