1. HEAT Academic Mentoring at Hazelwood East

2. 2004-2005 school year We started a reform committee because we wanted to improve:  -graduation rates  -attendance rates  -discipline rates  -ACT results  -state test results

3. 2005-2006 school year This was a planning year We asked: What are the issues that effect the students of our school?  -academic  -social  -behavioral

4. HSTW was adopted HSTW has 10 key practices; three are especially addressed by implementing an advisory program  4 - Set high expectations and get students to meet them.  6 - Engage students actively in learning.  8 - Involve students and parents in a guidance and advisement system that ensures completion of an accelerated program of study and a major.

5. 2006-2007 school year Developed academic mentoring curriculum  -Sent faculty to an academic mentoring Conference in Charlotte  -Interviewed other schools who had implemented an academic mentoring  -That summer 7 faculty members wrote and edited the initial set of academic mentoring lessons Piloted academic mentoring

6. What is important for a GOOD A cademic mentoring ? no more than 15 students per group keep groups with their grade level have a curriculum take attendance as you do for any other class assign a “grade” of sorts to the effort and participation keep mentors with the same group for all four years this is an important time; there is no one pulled out for any reason, no passes don’t make this an extra prep for teachers

7. 2007-2008 school year Academic mentoring once every other week Completed development of the academic mentoring curriculum for 08-09

8. 2008-2009 school year We will meet every Tuesday for 30 minutes Lessons are available in the copy center and onlineonline  -Decide within your department how you will pick them up Binders will be located in every department center Plain folder for each student

9. You are a mentor You will have a small group of students who will (ideally) be with you for their entire high school career You will eventually help them pick classes You will be someone who can encourage and motivate them You will hold student led conferences with these students
