Till Death Do We Part A Closer Look at Matt. 19 The Question of the Pharisees... (Matt. 19:3) –The Motive... –The History... –The Point: Is marriage a precarious relationship, uncertain, subject to be dissolved at the mere whim or pleasure of either party? Is divorce permissible for just any reason at all?

Till Death Do We Part A Closer Look at Matt. 19 Jesus’ Answer to the Pharisees... (Matt. 19:4-6) –"in the beginning." –"What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate."

Till Death Do We Part A Closer Look at Matt. 19 Looking Closer at Matt. 19:6... –God "joins" two together in marriage. –Man is not to "separate" what God has joined together. –Jesus was making an absolute pronouncement against divorce for ANY cause!

Till Death Do We Part A Closer Look at Matt. 19 The Pharisees Reply to Jesus... (Matt. 19:7) –The Pharisees immediately attempt to throw Jesus into conflict with Moses. –Moses never COMMANDED divorce, it was PERMITTED because of Israel's hardened and sinful hearts.

Till Death Do We Part A Closer Look at Matt. 19 Jesus’ Teaching on Divorce and Remarriage... (Matt. 19:9) –Jesus here gives a general law and makes one exception –"Whoever divorces his wife...and marries another commits adultery." –"except for immorality" –"he who marries a divorced woman"

First, remember that we must have authority for everything we do. Then ask, "Who has the authority to marry?" –Those who are single and never been married... –Those whose spouse have died (Rom. 7:2-3; 1 Cor. 7:39) –Those who have divorced their mates for the CAUSE of fornication- Matt. 19:9 Till Death Do We Part A Closer Look at Matt. 19

“Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God.” -1 Cor. 6:9-10
