2 P HILOSOPHY A holistic teacher evaluation process is implemented to promote self- reflection and effective instruction to ensure high-quality student education.

3 P URPOSE To enhance professional development through: Improving classroom instruction Encouraging best practices Assessing and improving teacher performance Promoting professional growth Fostering self-reflection

4 E VALUATION P ROCESS Types Formal Evaluation Self-Evaluation Goal Setting Student Evaluation Additional Evaluations Evaluation Frequency Areas of Evaluation Evaluators On-Notice Status Employment Recommendation Documents Personnel Files

5 T YPES : F ORMAL O BSERVATION Consists of: 2 formal in-class observations One per semester 4 walk-thrus Each observation will include: Pre-conference between the teacher and the evaluator Observation Written summary of the observation* Post-conference between the teacher and the evaluator* *These pieces must be completed within 10 days of the observation, unless an extended period is agreed upon by both the teacher and the evaluator

6 T YPES : S ELF -E VALUATION Provides teachers with the opportunity to reflect on his/her own classroom performance Self-evaluation form is used for this process Self-evaluation is done annually by all teachers Self-evaluation form must be completed and turned into the principal by March 15 th

7 T YPES : G OAL S ETTING Designed for teachers to select two or more goals to work on during the course of the year Goals need to be instructional in nature and must be approved by the designated supervisor prior to Oct. 15 th The designated supervisor will meet with the teacher throughout the school year to assist with the progress on the goal and should attempt to schedule observations in the goal area if possible Goal setting will be done annually by all teachers

8 T YPES : S TUDENT E VALUATION Designed to provide relevant student feedback to the teacher Student evaluations are conducted anonymously on computers through SurveyMonkey.com Will be conducted every year by each class period for all teachers

9 T YPES : A DDITIONAL E VALUATIONS Additional informal observations may be conducted at any time throughout the school year It is recognized that teacher responsibility extends beyond the classroom in many ways; observations made within the normal workday may constitute part of the evaluations These evaluations may also result in a written summary of the observations and a conference between the teacher and the evaluator on the results of the observations

10 E VALUATION F REQUENCY Teachers in their first 3 years: Formally evaluated 2 times during the school year Once before December 1 st Once before April 1 st Continuing Contract Teachers (4+ years) A formal observation is conducted every other year For all teachers, every year: Self-evaluation Goal setting Student evaluations

11 A REAS OF E VALUATION Planning the lesson Teaching the lesson Building relationships with students Managing the classroom Content knowledge Interpersonal skills ***See handout for additional information***

12 E VALUATORS All formal evaluations shall be conducted by the designated supervisor

13 O N -N OTICE S TATUS If a situation arises involving recommendation of probationary contract or non-renewal of contract, the principal will inform the teacher that he/she is classified as ON-NOTICE The teacher is advised in writing using a Plan of Improvement form relative to the areas in which improvement is necessary ON-NOTICE status applies to all teachers regardless of employment status

14 E MPLOYMENT R ECOMMENDATION All teachers shall receive written notice from their evaluators by April 1 st of each year indicating the evaluator’s employment recommendation Notice shall indicate one of the following three recommendations: Recommended for continued employment Recommended for continued employment with qualifications. A Plan of Improvement must be attached. Recommended for Non-Renewal. All previous Plans of Improvement must be attached.

16 P ERSONNEL F ILES Any written evaluation of the performance of a teacher shall, after review by the teacher and a conference between the teacher and evaluator, be signed and dated by both parties. One copy is given to the teacher One copy is filed in his/her personnel file (along with any rebuttal) The teacher’s signature does not imply agreement The Board agrees that no material derogatory to the teacher’s conduct, service, character, or personality shall be place in the file unless the teacher has had the opportunity to read the material and respond in writing. In the event of disagreement between the teacher and the evaluator, which may affect the teacher’s employment status, the teacher may request a review by the Superintendent of Schools or his designee, who shall not be the original evaluator.
