Page 2 Completed Survey Survey of Policies and Programs that Promote Fuel-Efficient Transport in APEC Economies (EWG03/2007A) Authored by Alliance to Save Energy Posted to APEC website May 2008

Survey Results Topics Covered –Increasing Fuel Economy of New Vehicles –Encouraging Purchase of Fuel-Efficient Vehicles –Improving Operational Efficiency of Existing Vehicles –Reducing Congestion on Roads and Highways –Boosting Mass Transit including Bus Rapid Transit –Promoting Urban Design and Transit Oriented Development –Raising Efficiency through Intermodal Freight Transport 11 Case Studies from 9 economies Page 3

Completed Workshop Workshop on Policies to Promote Energy Efficiency in Transportation (EWG 02/2008A) 24-25 March 2009 in Singapore 39 experts from 12 economies Organized by Alliance to Save Energy Page 4

Workshop Results Ideas for: –Increasing fuel economy of new vehicles –Improving operational efficiency –Energy efficiency in freight –Mass transit –Reducing road congestion –Land use and urban planning Consensus on long term goals of –improved automotive fuel efficiency, –transit-oriented development, –integrated land-use planning, and –reduction of private motorized transport Page 5

Workshop Outputs Recommendations for APEC Energy Working Group and Transportation Working Group (completed) –Role for APEC (support research into key areas) –Recommendations for economies: Ways to overcome barriers Best practices to consider Updated Survey of Policies and Programs that Promote Fuel-Efficient Transport in APEC Economies (in process) Page 6

Future Work U.S. contributions to approved APEC projects: Strengthen sections of survey on efficient transport systems. Examine approaches to automotive fuel efficiency standards with a view to possible best practice alternatives for interested economies. Inputs from Transportation Working Group welcome and encouraged. Conduct Seminar on Transportation Energy Efficiency Improvement Potential to inform possible notional efficiency improvement goal. Funded through U.S. Departments of State and Transportation. Energy, transport, and environmental benefits of: Bus rapid transit Transit-oriented development Intermodal freight transport Page 7
