3. THE EVIL EYE  One way to avoid the evil eye and its bad energy is to say a special prayer and then drop an oil drop in a cup with water. This is done three times. If the oil drops float on the surface of water and are united into a big one then this person is under the influence of the evil eye. If the oil drops float on the surface of the water but they are separated then this person is not affected by the evil eye.

4.  At midnight on New Year’s Eve the young women go to the water springs of the village and they cover them with butter and honey and they wish for health, happiness and welfare to come to their house like water flows in the spring and for their life to be as sweet as honey. Then they return to their house silent, without talking to each other or to anyone they may meet, carrying some of the spring water and sprinkle their houses with it.

6.  At the island of Corfu on Saturday before the Easter Day they fill big pots with water and they drop them from balconies and windows because when the pot breaks the evil “breaks” too.

7.  On the 6 th of January there are religious ceremonies that take place all over Greece according to which water is sanctified. All the faithful citizens go to a nearby sea, river, lake, swimming pool or even water tank where water is blessed by a priest and becomes holy. After the religious ceremony the priest throws a cross into the water. Some men fall into the water, no matter how cold it is, and swim towards the cross. The first person who reaches and gets hold of the cross is considered to be blessed and healthy throughout the year.

10.  At the beginning of the new school year a religious ceremony takes place during which a priest sprinkles students and teachers with holy water and bless them to have a creative and without problems school year.
