Energy in Ecosystems What are some forms of ENERGY ?

Energy in Ecosystems All organisms require energy to: Eat and digest food Hunt for food Move Think Live!

The Sun provides light and heat energy and is the ultimate source of energy for life. (in most ecosystems). not all sunlight makes it to the earth’s surface! – WHY?

Producers take energy from the sun and make it into chemical energy for living things (SUGAR). not all the energy is stored in the plant – most is used by the plant to survive, grow and live!

See p23 in text try activity A4 Try this…

Food Chain shows how the energy that is stored in food is transferred from one living thing to another.

Food Chain : plant → insect → sparrow → hawk (the Pepsi demo)

Questions for Pepsi Demo 1.Which organism was the most satisfied by the amount of energy they received? Which organism was the least satisfied? 2.What happened to the “Pepsi” from the sun that the plant didn’t pass along? 3.How much energy was used by the insect? 4.What can’t a food chain have 20 links?

Make your own food chain in your notes - Must use arrows to show energy flow

Producers and Consumers ________________ - any living thing that gets the energy it needs by making its own food. Eg. _________ ________________ - any living thing that gets the energy it needs by eating other things; either producers or other consumers. Eg ___________

Types of Consumers Herbivores – consumers that eat only plant materials. Eg: __________________ Carnivores – consumers that only eat other consumers. Eg: _________________ Omnivores – consumers that eat both plant and other consumers. Eg: ___________

Types of Consumers Decomposer - A consumer that eats dead and decaying matter. These organisms break the matter down further so it can continue in the nutrient cycles. Eg: _____ Scavenger - A consumer that eats the remains of food left behind by another organism. Eg Seagulls eating leftover fast eddies fries in the garbage
