16 How do scientists know the layers of the Earth?

17 They have come to this conclusion based on the movement of seismic waves (Earthquakes). Seismic waves move differently through different materials. More on this later!

19 3 Compositional zones (As determined by seismic waves) 1.Crust – solid, outermost layer of the Earth; rock (2 types: continental and oceanic) 2.Mantle – 2/3 of Earth’s mass, magma is formed 3.Core – center of the Earth, made of iron and nickel

20 But 5 structural Zones 1.Lithosphere – crust and upper mantle (tectonic plates) 2.Asthenosphere – plastic part of mantle plates move on 3.Mesosphere – majority of the mantle 4.Outer core – liquid iron core probably the source of Earth’s magnetosphere (North and South Poles) 5.Inner core – solid center of Earth

25 Law of gravitation (Isaac Newton) – The force of attraction between two objects depends on the masses and the distance between the objects

26 What effect does mass have on gravitational force?

27 The greater the mass of an object, the greater the gravitational pull.

28 What effect does distance have on gravitational force?

29 The greater the distance is between the objects, the less the gravitational pull.

30 What’s the difference between weight and mass?

31 Weight – the measure of the strength of the pull of gravity on an object. SI unit is the newton (n) Mass – how much matter is in an object An object’s mass will not change from place to place, the weight will.
