The Need for a National Strategy on Nano-safety in Slovenia Karmen Krajnc, Chemicals Office of the Republic of Slovenia Maja Remškar, Josef Stefan Institute, Ljubjana, Slovenia

Past activities in Slovenia Research sector has been involved in several activities on nanosafety. Several workshops, conferences and lectures on nanosafety at national and international level has been organized. Some publications, articles and media events has been performed.

Current situation in Slovenia Work plan of Chemicals Office of the Republic of Slovenia (2008-2012) (CORS) – acceptance of National Strategy on nanosafety in Slovenia by 2010 http://www.uk.gov.si/fileadmin/uk.gov.si/pageuploads/ pdf/Nacrt_2008-2012_11.9.08_pdf.pdf (only SLO) http://www.uk.gov.si/fileadmin/uk.gov.si/pageuploads/ pdf/Nacrt_2008-2012_11.9.08_pdf.pdf Members of REACH nanotechnology group (CORS) Various activities of research sector

Education in the near future Course on Nanosafety (Jozef Stefan International Aftergraduate School) Course of nanotoxicology at University in Ljubljana with the expected students in school year 2009-2010 is currently in the preparation stage (Faculty for biotechnology)

How to prepare a strategy Small working group – 5-10 persons – scientists – NGOs – industry – decision makers (government) Further intersector consideration Inclusion within national chemical safety programme http://www.uk.gov.si/fileadmin/uk.gov.si/pageuploads/pdf/National _chemical_safety_programme__2006-2010__FINAL.pdf

What should stategy include (I) Decision in which international (OECD, etc…) and EU activities slovene experts are going to participate: – research of safety of nanotechnologies, – regulatory aspects. Establishment of regular stakeholders exchange of views: – government, NGOs, research sector, industry,…

What should stategy include (II) Networking (those not included in regular exchange of views): producers of nanoparticles or nanomaterials, industry which use nanoparticles or nanomaterials in production of products. Education of students.

What should stategy include (III) Public awareness: – leaflets and booklets containg basic information on possible risks and preventive measures – media ( press, TV, Internet, public lectures, posters)., – special approach for different target groups (children, etc…) Conferences for stakeholders, information on internet

Regulatory aspects – areas of work impact of nanoparticles on health and the environment, recommendations for safe production and use of nanomaterials, monitoring strategies at the production plants, information to consumer,….
