Prepare to Engage “To understand our times, we must grasp how we arrived in them. Learning our history is a critical part of this. To engage with the forces behind the advance of Islam, or the disintegration of the West, we must first equip ourselves with the knowledge and wisdom of our past.” S. Douglas Birdsall Executive Chairman, The Lausanne Movement

1974 - God and Fellowship “We, members of the Church of Jesus Christ, from more than 150 nations, participants in the International Congress on World Evangelization at Lausanne, praise God for his great salvation and rejoice in the fellowship he has given us with himself and with each other.” Lausanne Covenant Introduction We continue to praise God for his great salvation and rejoice in the fellowship he has given us with himself and with each other.

The Spirit of Lausanne “We are deeply stirred by what God is doing in our day, moved to penitence by our failures, and challenged by the unfinished task of evangelization.” Lausanne Covenant Introduction The spirit of Lausanne is a spirit of humility and a spirit of penitence. When we sense past failures and God's present action, this leads to a look forward with hope.

Solemn Covenant “Therefore, in the light of this our faith and our resolve, we enter into a solemn covenant with God and with each other, to pray, to plan and to work together for the evangelization of the whole world." Lausanne Covenant Conclusion It is in this combined spirit that we enter into our Covenant or binding promise to bring the good news within meaningful reach of the whole population of the earth.

Theological Foundations The Lausanne Covenant is widely used as a foundation for partnerships across the world We need to encourage one another to ‘think theologically’, that is to relate all our thinking to God who is behind everything Our theology must always govern our conduct

Mission Imperatives The Lausanne Covenant calls for: ▫ Commitments to be undertaken ▫ Choices to be made ▫ Promises to be kept ▫ Sacrifice to be endured ▫ Words to be spoken ▫ Actions to be taken Chris Wright, Chair of the Lausanne Theology Working Group

World Evangelization Theme of Cape Town 2010: God in Christ, Reconciling the World to Himself Lausanne Vision: The Whole Church taking the Whole Gospel to the Whole World
