2 cause  The reason an action happens.  The cause for straight A’s is excellent study habits.

3 effect  The result or consequences of an action  The effect of excellent study habits is straight A’s.

4 compare  Figuring out the ways two or more things are alike  If we compare Tony and Mo, we find that they are both in 5 th grade and are frequently in trouble.

5 contrast  Figuring out the ways two or more things are different.  If we contrast Tony and Mo, we find that Tony enjoys causing trouble with his stunts but Mo wants to avoid getting in trouble.

6 reverberate  To resound or re-echo  We could hear the phone’s ring reverberate throughout the cave echoing from wall to wall.

7 descend  To move from a higher  place to a lower place; go down  We will descend the stairs to go from the second floor down to the first.

8 turbulence  Sudden, violent movements of air or water  The turbulence on the airplane was so bad that suitcases fell out of the overhead bins.

9 brimmed  To be full or overflowing  Her eyes brimmed with tears when she skinned her knees.

16 erratic  Acting, moving or changing in ways that are not expected or usual: not consistent or regular  The erratic movement of the car made me scribble all over my homework.

17 mission  A task that you consider to be a very important duty  Your mission as a fifth grader is to read 40 books over the year.
