2 The Tie That Binds

3  A symbol, image or pattern that appears in the myths, literature, and art of many different cultures.  Since these typical images, characters, narrative designs, and themes are present in all literature, they provide the basis for the study of interconnectedness of cultures and literature.  Essentially, they are universal symbols.  Archetypes are rooted in mythology and present in religious works, such as The Bible.

4  Swiss psychoanalyst  He explored archetypes by examining two different levels of consciousness: the personal unconscious and the collective unconscious.  Personal unconscious: our own repressed or other memories influence us.

5  Humankind’s inborn predisposition to certain feelings, perceptions, and behaviors. It is a type of “genetic memory” that we inherit.  This idea states that we react to certain situations the same way our pre-human ancestors did. These feelings are “engraved” in the minds of all humans.  Jung called the contents of the “collective unconscious” archetypes.
