1  Do you still need to turn in the Essay that was due Friday????  Take the sheet from the shelf and take out a sheet of notebook paper from your binder.

2 List 3 quick characteristics of a “Revolution.” What is it usually associated with?

3  Objective: Explain how the Scientific Revolution challenged peoples view of the world.

4  An intellectual movement that emphasized studying the natural world and the heavens (space) rather than blindly accepting old ideas about these subjects.

5  Most Europeans believed Ptolemy’s theory of the universe ◦ He said the earth was the center of the universe.  By the 1500’s, scientists began to question earlier findings. ◦ Nicolas Copernicus: developed heliocentric theory (sun centered universe) ◦ Earth and other planets then revolve around the sun.  Galileo built the first telescope able to see the planets: He confirmed this heliocentric theory.

6  The discovery contradicted the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church ◦ Major Power in Western Europe  What happened to Galileo????? Why??

7  Early 1600’s  Francis Bacon and Rene Descartes devise new methods of explaining the natural world.  Result = Scientific Method….Where do you see this everyday?  How does this change the intellectual world?
