2 Economic Impact of Tsetse $4.5 billion in losses due to impact of the disease on agriculture alone Only 6 percent of Africa’s 165 million cattle are found in the “tsetse belt” – an area covering 37 countries Over 65 million people (in mostly rural areas) are at risk of the disease with 50,000 known deaths from the disease each year In some regions, the toll of the disease on human life is greater than that of AIDS

5 CSO Network Best Practices to Date Public-private partnership coordinating efforts by all stakeholders particularly local organizations in- country that include government, civil society, intergovernmental (WHO, UN) and private sector actors Promotes transparency and accountability around decision-making, implementation and performance Ensures funds go to the best performing projects, thus maximizing impact Provides a means for focusing efforts, increasing awareness and empowerment at the local level
