2 Course Objectives  Build on the students’ knowledge of English.  Broaden their vocabulary  Deepen their understanding of grammar  Equip them with the tools to have meaningful discussions on a wide range of topics

3 Course Teaching Methods  The students will engage in pair and small group work. When suitable they will do role-play to demonstrate their mastery of studied items and topics.

6 Week 3  U 1, Education and Student Life  Listening: Making Inferences, Getting Meaning from Intonation  Speaking: Making, accepting and refusing invitations  Critical thinking: Using a lecture introduction to predict content  Vocabulary: Expression for making, accepting and refusing invitations

7 Week 4  U 2, City Life  Listening: Listening for Main Ideas  Speaking: Opening and Closing Phone Conversations  Critical Thinking: Predicting Questions Speakers Will Ask  Vocabulary: Terms for Opening and Closing Phone Conversations

8 Week 5  U2 continued  Listening: Listening for Clues to Relationships Between People  Speaking: Learning Names of Professions  Critical Thinking: Speculating about Hypothetical Situations  Vocabulary: Expressions for Expressing Frustration

9 Week 6  U 3, Business and Money  Listening: Listening for Main Ideas  Speaking: Talking about Managing Money  Vocabulary: Terms for Talking about Money; borrow vs. lend  Pronunciation: Identifying and Practicing Stressed Words

10 Week 7  U 3 continued  Listening: Making Inferences; Distinguishing between can and can’t  Speaking: Asking for, Giving, and Refusing Advice  Vocabulary: Expressions for Asking for, Accepting, and Rejecting Advice

11 Week 8  Review Units 1~3

12 Week 9  Midterm Exam (Role play in pairs or small groups no larger than four students.) The topic will be related to the units covered prior to the exam.

21 Week 18  Final Exam (2-on-1 interviews) Exam questions will be selected from a pool of discussion questions covered in the course of the semester.
