5 I. Classification Biologists have identified and named about 1.5 million species so far. They estimate that between 2 and 100 million have yet to be discovered.

6 Biologists use a classification system to name organisms and group them in a logical manner. A. Taxonomy: how scientists classify organisms and assign each organism a universally accepted name.

7 Scientists don’t refer to organisms by their common names because it is too confusing. Because 18 th -century scientists understood Latin and Greek, they used those languages for scientific names.

20 C. Phylogeny is the study of evolutionary relationships between organisms. 1. Biologists group organisms into categories that represent lines of evolutionary descent, not just physical similarities. This is called evolutionary classification.
