Controlled Experiments and Natural Experiments Controlled experiment- an experiment conducted in the controlled conditions of a laboratory. Natural experiments- when a natural event, such as a volcano, acts as an experimental treatment in an ecosystem.

Interpreting Results Once results have been obtained, analysis of the data begins. This process involves two types of reasoning, inductive and deductive. Inductive reasoning- the process of making more general information to the more specific. Sometimes this is called the “top-down” Deductive reasoning- the process of moving from specific observations to broader generalizations and theories. Sometimes called a “bottom up”

Deductive vs. Inductive Reasoning Examples of Deductive Statements All dogs are mammals. All mammals have kidneys. Therefore all dogs have kidneys. Since all squares are rectangles, and all rectangles have four sides, all squares have four sides. All chemists are smart, since chemists are scientists and all scientists are smart. Since all men are mortal, and Socrates is a man, Socrates is mortal. The sun is a star; the sun has planets; therefore some stars have planets. Examples of Inductive Statements All swans we have seen have been white; therefore all swans are white. All swans we have seen have been white; therefore the next swan we see will be white. All known planets travel about the sun in ellipitical orbits; therefore all planets travel about the sun in ellipitical orbits. Since Chris is a good athlete, Chris's sister must be a good athlete also.

Partner Pair-Share Collaborate with your partner and create one inductive and one deductive statement.

Collecting Data Replication- repeating the measurement many times Sample size- the number of times the measurement is repeated. Accuracy- how close a measured value is to the actual or true value. Precision- how close to one another the repeated measurements are. Uncertainty- how much the measure differs from the true value.
