6 Housing conditions have an important impact on public health. Most people spend an average of up to 90% of their time indoors.

7 More than 6 million substandard housing units nationwide Residents of substandard housing are at increased risk for exposure to lead, carbon monoxide, mold, cockroaches, dust mites, pesticide residues, tobacco smoke, combustion gases, and radon, rat bites, and falls. Children in substandard housing are more likely to have elevated blood lead levels and to have ever been diagnosed with asthma. Children, the elderly, African Americans, Native Americans, and the poorest Americans are at greatest risk for fire- related injuries and deaths.
