W ELCOME TO English Lesson Simulation 2009 Done by: GLT

WHAT WILL IT BE LIKE? Two locations: Sok Ann High School and Ang Chom High School Team of 8-9 OSL members will be split into half Only 4-5 teachers in each class

WHAT WILL IT BE LIKE? Small classroom 30 – 40 pupils in each class Quite cramped, so try to avoid group activities

E NGLISH STUDENTS There will be students ranging from grades 9 -12 Be prepared that their standard will vary across the class Most of these students already have a basic grasp of English Grammar may not be perfect, but their vocabulary is quite good!

Don’t look down on them. Instead, try to teach them new vocabulary. Teach them to have confidence in communicating in English.

BRIEF OVERVIEW 10 lessons x 2 hours each Self-introductions Describing family and people Jobs and Occupations Communications in English Adverbs, Actions and Places Good Manners Essence of English lessons: Communication!

TEACHING METHOD ( SUGGESTED ) One OSL member stands at the front to teach Act as the anchor to ensure that the whole class is moving at around the same pace Rest of the team divide themselves among the class During demonstrations or skits, OSL members collaborate If possible, rotate your roles at intervals

TEACHING METHOD ( SUGGESTED ) Although the lesson plans have time durations fixed accordingly, the main point is to let the Cambodians understand. Give them time to try out among themselves But! Try not to overshoot the time given as there is a different team for each lesson. You may not see the same class the next time.

B E PREPARED Examples on how to explain are in the lesson plans, so don’t fret! You will be: playing ice-breakers  Using placards  Doing demonstrations or skits  Giving the Cambodians ‘application time’  Giving them time to challenge themselves

English lessons will be alittle different from IT lessons No computers, so students will be focused on YOU. Try to make your teaching interesting

L ET ’ S TRY IT OUT ! You are now in your three teams. Each team will be given 5 minutes to discuss and prepare how you would like to carry out the lesson plan allocated Team 1 – Lesson 1 (Introducing numbers) Team 2 – Lesson 2 (How to describe qualities) Team 3 – Lesson 5 (Demonstrate meaning of adverbs)

Let’s try it out!

As time is limited, each team will only have 10 mins to try teaching In Cambodia, there will be around 4 teachers in each class, so each team could send up 4 teachers for the first 5 minutes, then send up the others for the second 5 minutes.

D ISCUSSION TIME Now, we’ll have a quick group discussion. Please sit in your three teams and think about these few questions: 1. Do you think that the teaching pace was okay? 2. What are some possible problems that may arise during the actual lessons?

YOUR SURVIVAL GUIDE ( AGAIN ) During the IT simulation, we went through a comprehensive survival guide Most of the points listed are very important They will apply again during English lessons!

REITERATION K now the OSL members you are teaching with E nsure that all logistics are ready R ead through the lesson plans thoroughly V isualize the lessons being carried out Curve: Be flexible in any situation!

Thank you! Any questions? Let’s give our 200% when we serve the students in Cambodia!
