12/28/08 - L6 ProcessesCopyright 2009 - Joanne DeGroat, ECE, OSU1 Processes

12/28/08 - L6 ProcessesCopyright 2009 - Joanne DeGroat, ECE, OSU2 Outline for Today What is a Process? What is a Process Description? An outline for a Description Example Putting it all together Ref: Finkelstein Ch5

12/28/08 - L6 ProcessesCopyright 2009 - Joanne DeGroat, ECE, OSU3 Background Process descriptions are similar to mechanism descriptions! Difference – content Mechanism description  Describe the physical attributes of a mechanism and how it operates Process description  Describe the steps of a process

What is a Process Description? “Process descriptions are precise portrayals of events occurring over time that lead to some outcome.” They describe The steps in the operation of a mechanism The steps in a conceptual process Focus less on the physical attributes of the mechanism and more on a mechanism’s function and how the parts work together. 12/28/08 - L6 ProcessesCopyright 2009 - Joanne DeGroat, ECE, OSU4

Process Description: Outline Introduction Define the mechanism with a technical definition and add extensions as necessary for the reader to understand the discussion. Describe the purpose function, and operation of the mechanism. List the major steps of the mechanism’s operation in the order that they will be discussed. 12/28/08 - L6 ProcessesCopyright 2009 - Joanne DeGroat, ECE, OSU5

Discussion Step 1  Define the Step with a logical definition and discuss it in reasonable depth.  Describe the equipment, material, or concepts involved with this step.  Describe what happens during this step.  Show the relationship between this step and the next. Steps 2 to n  Repeat as for step 1 Conclusion Summarize and provide closure. 12/28/08 - L6 ProcessesCopyright 2009 - Joanne DeGroat, ECE, OSU6 Process Description: Outline

The type of process Process descriptions will vary depending on what is being described. Computer Algorithms Physical Processes  Chemical  Physical Engines AC Systems 12/28/08 - L6 ProcessesCopyright 2009 - Joanne DeGroat, ECE, OSU7

Process Description Example 1 Internal Combustion Engine Mechanism Description – the engine, the cylinder head, the block, the valves, the pistons, the crankshaft, … Process Description  The Intake stroke  The Compression Stroke  The Ignition (Combustion) Stroke  The Exhaust Stroke 12/28/08 - L6 ProcessesCopyright 2009 - Joanne DeGroat, ECE, OSU8

Process Description Example 2 Driving a Car Mechanism Description  List of Mechanisms involved, Ideas?  Purpose and operation of mechanism  List major steps Steps in the Process? Ideas?  Buckle safety belt, activate ignition with key, depress foot break, release hand break, engage transmission, release foot break, etc, etc, etc Visual Aids? 12/28/08 - L6 ProcessesCopyright 2009 - Joanne DeGroat, ECE, OSU9

Process Description Example 3 Bubble Sort Algorithm Mechanism Description  Definition of Bubble Sort Algorithm  Purpose and operation of mechanism  List major steps Steps in the Process? Ideas?  For elements 1 to N, Iteratively compare n and n+1 elements, swap if n+1 is larger. Repeat above for 2 to N, etc. Visual Aids? 12/28/08 - L6 ProcessesCopyright 2009 - Joanne DeGroat, ECE, OSU10

Putting it all together: Winemaking process The winemaking process is the process for creating wine. The process varies slightly depending on the grape variety and the type of wine targeted. The process for red wines is typical of all of the variations. Steps in the process. 12/28/08 - L6 ProcessesCopyright 2009 - Joanne DeGroat, ECE, OSU11

Steps Pick the grapes when ripe. The grapes are crushed and the pulp of the grape, along with the skin, is allowed to ferment. Primary fermentation takes 1 to 2 weeks. The liquid is transferred to vessels for secondary fermentation. During secondary fermentation the remaining sugars are turned into alcohol. The wine is transferred to oak barrels for aging. Aged wine is bottled. 12/28/08 - L6 ProcessesCopyright 2009 - Joanne DeGroat, ECE, OSU12

Process Description Checklist Defined the mechanism of process? Described overall function? Listed main steps of the process? Defined each step? Described each step? Discussed needed theory for each step? Provided Transitions? For iterative process, shown where branching occurs?

Consider the QuadFINKEL A figure skating jump described on pages 77 – 79 of Finkelstein Apply the previous checklist to this description Can you do a QuadFINKEL? 12/28/08 - L6 ProcessesCopyright 2009 - Joanne DeGroat, ECE, OSU14

Assignment Pick a process to describe  Choose a mechanism in action OR  Choose a conceptual process Try to find a process with between 4-6 steps Follow the full outline presented 12/28/08 - L6 ProcessesCopyright 2009 - Joanne DeGroat, ECE, OSU15

Group Assignments Groups have been formed Meet with your group Write up a “Team” agreement sheet that all team members sign and get a copy of. Includes contact information Responsibilities Intent/ability to meet outside of class – pick a meeting time or two that all can make Pick a Team Name - cannot be Buckeyes Turn in copy of signed agreement Friday 12/28/08 - L6 ProcessesCopyright 2009 - Joanne DeGroat, ECE, OSU16
