1. Create a PowerPoint or video presentation that advocates for the teaching of art in the elementary school. The three guiding principles to consider: Art is a visual language that is biologically propelled (knowledge of research) and shaped by environment (role of the educator). Multiple approaches to understanding and teaching art: philosophical approaches, learning theories, theories on art making, developmental theories and state and national standards. Art is essential to 21st century skills: Self-direction, Collaboration, Information Literacy, Critical Thinking and Reasoning, and Invention (parallels to second bullet). Understanding is created when information is applied to experience. Storytelling goes a long way in getting your point across to the audience. This presentation should be visually engaging, informative, and thought-provoking. Consider using intriguing art work, appropriate, but limited text (you can share your extensive knowledge in your position paper), and personal narrative (people relate to stories). The use of examples can “define and defend” your statements. Statements without “representation” do not hold much weight with skeptics.

2. Write a position paper, which provides clarification and detail, to accompany your PowerPoint presentation. In short, a position paper is an essay that presents an opinion about an issue. For both your PowerPoint/Video and position paper consider the following: Introduction: Consider your audience: Start with an opening that attracts attention and summarizes the issue. Inform the audience of your point of view. Development: The topic should be developed with: -a general statement of the position -an elaboration (examples) that reference documents and source data -past and present experiences and authoritative testimony -Keep your voice active -Quote sources to establish authority -Stay focused on your point of view throughout -Focus on logical arguments (be specific) -Don't lapse into summary while presenting your case (save this for the conclusion)

Conclusion: Summarize, then conclude, your argument -Refer to your opening (as well as the main points): a) Does the conclusion restate the main ideas? b) Reflect the succession and importance of the arguments? c) Logically conclude their development? Finally: -Share a draft with others to better develop your work and ensure that your argument is clear -Revise, check your spelling and grammar, and identify your sources (APA style should be used—and can be found on the ART325 website)

Write a position paper to: Establish your credibility—you are demonstrating that you have a command of the issues and the research behind them, and can present them clearly Let your passion be demonstrated in the force of your argument rather than in the use of emotional terms Guide you in being consistent in maintaining your position in negotiation Research: Develop supporting evidence including factual knowledge, statistical evidence, authoritative testimony, and examples (visual and narrative/story) Identify the issues—keeping in mind your audience Assume familiarity with basic concepts but define unfamiliar terms/concepts or state meanings that define your point of departure Refer to those who agree with your position to assist you in developing your argument Document your sources

Avoid: Too much text in your PowerPoint presentation (with video not an issue) General and “ungrounded” statements Spelling and grammatical errors Excessive “discipline specific” jargon in your PowerPoint/Video presentation (save this for your position paper) Incomplete documentation Mid-term is due on Friday, March 27 at 5:00 p.m. Email presentation (or link) and position paper to: csuarted@gmail.comcsuarted@gmail.com

Mid Term Assessment Advanced Introduction attracts attention and summarizes the issue—informs the audience of point of view PowerPoint/video is visually engaging and creative Development is focused, presented in an active voice, supported by research and acknowledges three guiding principles Conclusion effectively summarizes argument No mechanical errors Bibliography provided and properly formatted (APA) Proficient Introduction mostly attracts attention and summarizes the issue—mostly informs the audience of point of view PowerPoint/video is mostly visually engaging and creative Development is mostly focused, presented in an active voice, supported by research and acknowledges three guiding principles Conclusion is mostly effective in summarizing argument Few mechanical errors Bibliography provided and properly formatted (APA) Developing Introduction somewhat attracts attention and summarizes the issue—does not clearly inform the audience of point of view PowerPoint/video is somewhat visually engaging; mostly conventional and predictable Development is somewhat focused, not always presented in an active voice, sometimes supported by research and does not clearly acknowledge three guiding principles Conclusion somewhat effective in summarizing argument; original issue not clearly revisited Multiple mechanical errors Bibliography provided but not properly formatted (APA) Basic Introduction does not attract attention or summarizes the issue—does not inform the audience of point of view PowerPoint/video is conventional and predictable Development is confusing, not presented in an active voice, lacks support of research and doesn’t acknowledge three guiding principles Conclusion does not summarize argument; original issue not revisited Frequent mechanical errors Bibliography incomplete (APA)
