Jones, Assistant Editor Fil-Am Cultural Dance Committee, who better to represent the association? The group, consisting of volunteer- members under the able leadership of Enri Fulmore, chairperson and choreographer, have traveled throughout most of San Diego County to display their talents and artistry, mostly at their own expense. As word of their popularity spreads, invitations for their appearance have been received from as far away as Dubai! The group most recent appearance was on September 3 at the San Diego Padres Filipino Cultural Night pre-game entertainment held at Petco Park. Pictured above are, from to left to right, Dulia Candelaria, Cita Lime, reigning Miss Fil- Am, Dejah Urbanovitch, Mitchelle Rotulo, Malou Hamto, committee co- chair, Belle Limoge, Jackie Lazaga and Enri Fulmore. SUN, WATER AND BUGS - PERFECT PLACE FOR A PICNIC The marine layer hovering off shore never made it to the hills of Camp Pendleton, or at least there are no evidence of it making it to shore. Except for a few early risers who were trying their luck in hooking “a big one”, Lake O'Neill appeared to be almost deserted early in the morning of August 28. At the water edge, I spotted two familiar faces. They were there as previously arranged to “stake out” an ideal spot for the Fil-Am picnic. (Continued on page 2) FIL-AM PICNIC 1

There were early concerns that the Astro Jump, a favourite with children, may not make it, but thanks to Gerry Tropel who made sure that it got there on time. As if on cue, a caravan of vehicles began to arrive and in short order, at the direction of association president, Mely Sivage, former president Rica Derosier and vice president Cita Lime, the place soon began to appear like a picnic site. 2 With the food line set up (the lechon ably handled by Rica), members and guests began to trickle in and by 1:00 PM, all the seats in the two cabanas were taken. Despite the appearance of early doggie bags, there were really no concern of food running out as there are more than enough for all comers, even for the late ones. It is estimated that about 125 came to enjoy the day. If the purpose of the picnic was for the members and guests to have fun, and to renew old friendships and make new ones, it was quite evident that it was achieved. By late afternoon, and as a strong breeze began to whip lines of white caps on the lake, conversations were overheard at how much fun the day have been, and how nice the picnic site was… despite the bugs.
