Governor & Lieutenant Governor Qualifications & Term  Must be at least 30 years of age  Must be US citizen for at least15 years  Must a citizen of the state for at least 6 years  Serves a 4 year term  May serve 2 consecutive terms  The Lieutenant governor must have the same qualifications. However, they are able to serve as many terms as they desire.

3. Governor & Lieutenant Governor Election  The governor is elected by the majority of the popular vote  The electoral vote does not affect the outcome of the governor

Governor Powers  Manages the state budget  Directs the Attorney General to act as a representative of the state in lower court cases involving the state law  Makes annual “State of the State” address to the legislature  Prepares budget bills for consideration by the Georgia house of representatives  Serves as a commander in chief of the Georgia National Guard  Heads the state’s civil defense units  Sends Georgia Highway Patrol officers and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation into communities inn times of danger

5. Lieutenant Governor Powers  Presiding officer of the State Senate  Makes senate committee appointments  Assigns senate bills to committees  Recognizes members of the senate who wish to speak  May affect the passage or failure of some senate bills

8. State Agencies  FDA  Child Services  EPA (environmental protection agency)  DOT (department of transportation)  ATF (Alcohol tobacco and firearms)  GBI (Georgia bureau of investigation)  ICE (immigration customs enforcement)  SNAP (supplemental nutrition assistance program)

9. How it Works  ATF goes to the governor of GA and asks for money.  Governor must negotiate, because many other agencies (like ICE and SNAP) want and need more money too.  ATF and Georgia governor (currently Nathan Deal) must agree on funding that will keep each other happy  Governor does this with all the other agencies in GA.  Legislature also works with governor an helps make these decisions.  Also do something like this with laws for each agency

10. Examples  DOT: law that states you must be 15 years of age or older to be able to have your drivers permit and you must be 16 years of age or older to have a drivers licence.  SNAP: governor and FDA may work out some foods that will not be purchased using food stamps  ATF: must be 21 years of age or older to consume alcoholic beverages

11. Protecting the Citizens  The Governor and the state agencies look over the citizens to protect their rights.  The state agencies ensure our health and protection.  The governor watches over all of the departments of the state, which is basically serving the citizens.  This branch provides multiple services such as education, medical care for the poor, etc.
