2.  Roosevelt faced opposition from many people, both Democrats and Republicans, about his New Deal Programs. Republicans did not like the how Roosevelt used “Deficit Spending” to pay for the programs. Democrats felt he did not do enough to help people and suggested taxing the wealthy more, create pension plans, and nationalize banks. Roosevelt responded with a new set of “Acts” called the “Second New Deal” where he put millions more to work, helped strengthen workers unions, and provided benefits to the elderly and unemployed.

5.  ROBIN HOOD…..?  Huey Long…Louisiana Senator that FDR called the most dangerous man in America  “Every Man a King, But No Man Wears a Crown” and the “Share Our Wealth Plan”  Give every family a house and lot worth $6000, annual income of $2500, a radio, a car, and a washing machine  Every youth would have a Free college education, every veteran a bonus, and every elder a pension  Money would come from rich who would not be allowed to make more than $1 million

7.  Father Charles Coughlin…salesman of the gospel (one time supporter of “New Deal is Christ’s Deal”)  Thought FDR not doing enough  Thought FDR catered to big business and high finance  Became too radical in criticism and ideas  “FDR’s leadership should be terminated with a bullet”  Nationalization of banks, abolish Federal Reserve System  Fascist leanings to make the nation a corporate state like Hitler and Mussolini…Anti-Semitism

9.  Dr. Francis Townsend…From the “LBC”! – Long Beach  Aimed at elderly pension and care  Everyone over 60 retire with $200 pension  Must spend all $ to keep it in circulation  Recipients would have to retire to collect pension = more open jobs for the unemployed  2 cent tax on business transactions would pay for the pensions

12.  1 st New Deal (1933) – Not fast enough economic recovery  Created 2 nd new deal (1935)  Another series of Programs & reforms  Wanted to provide economic security to everyone

13.  Became Law in August 1933  For : Elderly & Unemployed  Considered = Federal Retirement Insurance  65 or older = Income  Unemployed = Money until you found a job  Also Helped: People with disabilities / poor families

14.  WPA - Works Progress Administration Created:  8.5 million workers  Built: 650,000 mi. of hwy  125,000 buildings  8000 parks  124,000 bridges  853 airports  Commissioned Artists = Called “Federal Number One”
