Why FDR did not launch a Third New Deal? Roosevelt hinted at plans to launch a 3 rd New Deal The economy had improved enough to convince Americans that the Depression was finally ending Roosevelt faced increasing pressure from congress to cut back deficit spending By 1939 the New Deal era was over and Roosevelt became concerned with events in Europe
Supporters of New Deal Roosevelt supported ALL in need Programs help everyone -Social Security,jobs,african americans,women Help “forgotten one” Roosevelt was “friend of Labor” Gave workers more rights- Unions Unemployment dropped to 14% Society needs gov in their lives
Critics of New Deal Republicans : -Spending more money than have -Federal gov now too big and powerful -Threatens free enterprise, individualism Liberals : -didn’t socialize enough -Too much poor, less rich -Capitalism and socialism -Didn’t reach goals
Economic Effects of Scaling Back the New Deal Congress wanted Roosevelt to scale back He promised the American public that a balanced budget would be maintained As he scaled back, industrial production dropped and the number of unemployed rose With these results congress wanted Roosevelt to use deficit spending He was against using deficit spending
Key Words Social Security- helped elder,retired,disables,families in need etc. Federal tax to support them. (supply income) Nation Labor Relations Board- mediator in disputes between unions and employers Deficit Spending- when more is spent by the government than is collected in taxes
