1 Flatbed scanning in the HoA Visual Resources Centre How to use the Epson scanner

2 First make sure that the scanner USB cable is connected to the back of the Mac Secondly, switch on the Mac (button on rear of screen, bottom left-hand side) Then switch on the scanner (button on front lower left)

3 Opening the scanner software Single click on the VueScan icon in the dock If the icon is not visible in the taskbar, click on Finder, then Applications, VueScan & double click

4 This is what you should see:

5 Before scanning check the following: In the Input tab that the Mode & Media are correct: Flatbed for prints, texts & photos Also in the Input tab, check the resolution (100-150dpi is usually fine for text; 200dpi for colour images; 300dpi usually requested by publishers.)

6 Before scanning continued… Select where you wish to save your scans on the Output tab – click on the @ next to Default folder & navigate to your folder

7 Before scanning continued: Also on the Output tab, select how you wish to save your scans – select jpeg or TIFF

8 & now to scan your image/text Place the item you wish to scan on the scanner glass, moving it up into the top left -hand corner and trying to make sure it is as straight as possible Then click Preview in the task pane

9 You should end up with something like this:

10 & the next step…. Note the flashing dotted line: hover the mouse cursor over this until you see a double-headed arrow Then drag the dotted line to make your final selection Then click Scan. You will be asked to Choose the jpeg a file name; then click Save. Your scan will preview on the screen

11 Editing and saving your scanned images If you wish to alter your scans, such as rotating, adjusting brightness and contrast, changing the size (both file size and physical size), the Mac has Photoshop and Preview. If you require guidance on how to use these, please ask Vicky or Christine for assistance. You can save your images to a memory stick, CD or e-mail them to yourself.
