ANATOMY LECTURE 1 Anatomy vs. Physiology Anatomical Directions
2
ANATOMY VS. PHYSIOLOGY Anatomy is the study of the structures in the body (ie form) Greek for “cutting up” Physiology is the study of the functions of particular structures (ie function) Greek for relationship to nature Dissecting a frog and noticing there are muscle striations: Anatomy or Physiology? Noticing when certain muscles are flexed, an arm moves: Anatomy or Physiology?
3
ANATOMICAL DIRECTION It’s all RELATIVE! Something could be anterior in one instance and posterior in another!
4
SUPERIOR VS. INFERIOR Superior=ABOVE Inferior=BELOW *Think “I am superior (above) you. Your are inferior (below) me”* Is your foot SUPERIOR or INFERIOR to your knee? Is your brain SUPERIOR or INFERIOR to your heart?
5
ANTERIOR VS. POSTERIOR Anterior(ventral)=FRONT Posterior(dorsal)=BACK *With this one, I like to think about a DORSAL fin being on a fishes’ back…Or your posterior is your butt….* Are your eyes ANTERIOR or POSTERIOR to your brain? Are your heels ANTERIOR or POSTERIOR to your toes?
6
MEDIAL VS. LATERAL Medial=MIDDLE Lateral=AWAY FROM MIDDLE *Medial and Middle both start with “M”* Is your belly button more MEDIAL or LATERAL than your eye? Are your toes more MEDIAL or LATERAL than your nose?
7
PROXIMAL VS. DISTAL Proximal=CLOSER TO TRUNK Distal=FURTHER FROM TRUNK *Distal sounds like distant* Is your knee more PROXIMAL or DISTAL than your toes? Are your feet more PROXIMAL or DISTAL than your head?
8
SUPERFICIAL VS. DEEP Superficial=CLOSE TO THE SURFACE Deep=FURTHER AWAY FROM THE SURFACE *I don’t think I need to explain this one…* Is your skin more SUPERFICIAL or DEEP than your heart?
