STC Plant Growth and Development Lesson 2: What Is Inside a Seed? Kennewick School District

2 STC Plant Growth and Development Lesson 2: What Is Inside a Seed?
This is a hidden slide for teacher information. Overview In lesson 1, students looked at the outside of a bean seed. In this lesson, students will look inside to observe the internal structures. Brassica seeds are too small for this experiment; bean seeds are bigger, which allows students to see the characteristics that most seeds share.

3 STC Plant Growth and Development Lesson 2: What Is Inside a Seed?
This is a hidden slide for teacher information. Lesson Objectives Students observe how the bean seed has changed after being soaked in water overnight. Students record their observations. Students open the bean and observe the inside. Students draw and label the parts of a bean seed.

4 STC Plant Growth and Development Lesson 2: What Is Inside a Seed?
This is a hidden slide for teacher information. Background All seeds have two main parts: the embryo, or baby plant, and the cotyledon, a thickened leaf that stores food. The embryo is the tiny, undeveloped plant that includes all the parts of a mature plant. The outside of the seed, or seed coat, protects these delicate internal structures. The cotyledon contains food—oils, carbohydrates, and protein. Once the plant has emerged and developed leaves, it can manufacture its own food.

5 Materials list For each student: 1 dry bean seed 2-3 soaked bean seeds

7 STC Plant Growth and Development Lesson 2: What Is Inside a Seed?
What did you predict would happen to the dry bean seed after soaking overnight in water? ©2003 Microsoft Corporation.

8 STC Plant Growth and Development Lesson 2: What Is Inside a Seed?
Use your senses (except taste, of course) to observe the soaked seeds. Compare the soaked seed to a dry seed. ©2003 Microsoft Corporation.

9 STC Plant Growth and Development Lesson 2: What Is Inside a Seed?
Record your observations of the outside of the soaked seed on Activity Sheet 1, next to yesterday’s observations of the dry seed. Be sure to use accurate describing words. ©2003 Microsoft Corporation.

10 How is the soaked bean seed different from the dry bean seed?

Now peel off the seed coat. Gently pry open the two halves of the seed. Use your hand lens to observe the parts of the seed. ©2003 Microsoft Corporation.
