1 Increasing Educational Opportunities for Working-Age Adults in Greater Louisville

2 Prominent Workforce Issues Finding qualified pools of workers. Increasing college going and completion rates. Addressing “affordability” and “accessibility” issues related to entering college and other forms of advanced training. Adjusting to an aging and retiring workforce.

3 How is Greater Louisville working to address these issues with public and private partners?

4 Mayor Jerry E. Abramson’s Challenge Adopting and supporting the Mayor’s “Finish-College” initiative. Working with employers to provide front-end tuition assistance and flexible schedules allowing workers to get to class. Increasing awareness that a college degree opens the door to multiple career opportunities.

5 The Mayor’s “Finish-College” Initiative In 2006, the Louisville region awarded 2,458 associate’s degrees, ranking us 9 th amongst our peer cities. Ten more would have ranked us 8 th ; 150 more would have moved us up to 6 th ; and 300 would have moved us up to the Top 5. KentuckianaWorks Board is committed to moving Greater Louisville into the Top 5 cities by 2010 in awarding associate’s degrees.

6 What is KentuckianaWorks doing to provide on the ground support for the Mayor’s “Finish College” initiative? Enhancing capacity of the KentuckianaWorks College Access Center – a One-Stop that is providing assistance to anyone interested in going back to college. Focusing nearly $2 million dollars in Workforce Investment Act funding on job training and associate degree strategies to increase post-secondary enrollment and completion rates. Implementing the “Fair Share” plan aimed at supporting Top Employers wanting to increase the skill levels of their workforce.

7 Regional Strategies KentuckianaWorks College Access Center – A One-Stop center that offers free counseling, assessment, and Financial Aid Form Assistance (FAFSA). Spring Fling – An annual event involving twenty four educational institutions targeting those interested in returning to college and completing their degrees. HIRE (Higher Income Requires Education) – Partnership between economic development, government, and over twenty colleges and universities aimed at getting more people to pursue education beyond a high school diploma. Graduate! Greater Louisville: GED to PhD –This is designed to connect resources for anyone interested in going back to college – Call 1-877-GO4-GRAD to get started.

9 Successful and strategic public / private workforce development partnerships Metropolitan College is a partnership between the University of Louisville, JCTC, United Parcel Service, Metro Louisville and State government. Eliminates “affordability” and “accessibility” issues by covering education costs. Offers comprehensive career development services for all J.C.T.C. and Metropolitan College students thru the KentuckianaWorks One-Stop Center known as CREW - Connecting Resources, Education and Workforce.
