2.   GDP (Purchasing Power Parity)-  The total value, in adjusted US dollars, of all goods and services produced in a country in one year.  GDP Per Capita-  The total value of all goods and services produced in a country in one year, divided by the population of that country.  This is the indicator we look at. 3.   Percentage of the total population that is living below a determined income that represents sufficient income to meet basic needs in that country.  Taiwan has the lowest rate at 1.16% below poverty line.  Chad, Haiti and Liberia have the highest rates at 80% of people below the poverty line.  The United States has 15% living in poverty.  Where? 4.   A measure of the distribution of family income in a country. GINI indexes range from 0 meaning complete equality – 100 meaning “perfect” inequality.  Countries tend to range from a low of 23 (Sweden) where incomes are relatively equal, to 70 (Namibia) where a few people hold nearly all the wealth, leaving many people very poor.  The USA has a GINI index of 46, which is in the middle range.  Where? 5.   Number of infant (babies under 1) deaths per 1,000 live births.  In the US the rate is 6.3 deaths per 1,000 live births.  Some of the lowest rates are under 3/1,000 live births in countries like Singapore, Iceland and Japan.  Some of the highest are over 125/1,000 live births in countries like Chad, Sierra Leone, and Afghanistan.  Where? 6.   The age to which a person is expected to live (on average) at the time of their birth. The age changes as one grows older.  The highest life expectancies are over 85 yrs. In Macau and Monaco. Japan is close behind with 83.9 yrs.  The lowest life expectancies are under 50 yrs. in the poorest countries like Afghanistan and Chad, and those impacted by AIDS like South Africa and Swaziland.  The life expectancy at birth in the US is 78.49.  Where? 7.   Percentage of population known to be infected with the AIDS virus.  Almost all of the countries with high prevalence rates are in Sub-Saharan Africa. A few in Caribbean. 8.   Percentage of the population who can read by age 15.  In the US it is 99%. There are 21 countries that have higher than 99% literacy.  Again, it is the poorest countries with the lowest rates. Starting to see a pattern here? Chad, Niger and Afghanistan all have under 30% literacy.  In many countries there is a big difference between male and female literacy rates. Why might that be?  Where? WFB - People Literacy Rate

9.   A blended index measuring average achievement in three basic dimensions of human development—a long and healthy life, knowledge, and a decent standard of living. The rate incorporates many of the indicators we have just learned about. Countries are ranked from best to worst, and that is the number we look at.  HDR – Rank Should be a number between 1 (best) and 220 (worst)  The US is ranked #4 in the world. Norway, Australia, and Netherlands are ranked 1, 2, and 3.  The highest (worst) countries are again in Africa, and include Congo, Niger, Chad, and Burundi. Human Development Index Ranking

10.   Wilson World has a GDP per capita of $15,000, and a GINI index of 58. 13.   Benvenutoburg is embroiled in civil war (war within a country). It has an unstable dictatorship.
