Agriculture Beulah Mazerolle

New breeds A lot of English landowners discovered that better farm animals would bring in better earnings. Progressively new breeds of cattle and sheep replaced the old, non advanced types. The new and improved animals produced more and better meat, for sheep they produced thicker and fuller wool than in earlier times. Until the agricultural revolution the animals wear not raised to produce their meat. They raised their cattle for milk and their sheep for wool, the ones that couldn’t be fed in the winter time because lack of fodder they used for its meets. The new animals were tougher and did not get infections or diseases at easily The new and improved animals were harder to take care of because they were more expensive, and especially in the winter. Many famers were financially unable to buy the new animals and plants, and couldn’t compete with the more wealthy who could invest in them.

Jethro Tull He was an English inventor who was trying to understand the way soil help plants grow. He found out that when soil was well broken up, or cultivated and enriched with manure, or fertilizer, crops grew much better. Manure is animal droppings used to fertilize land. He invented a machine called the seed drill, which was haled by horses. Seed drill planted seeds neatly in rows and was faster and you wasted less then the older version of broadcasting seeds. Broadcasting is to sow seeds by throwing them over field by hand. This way many more seeds took root and not eaten by birds and animals. Planting in rows made weeds and crop maintenance a lot easier. Seed drill made it possible to farm with less people.

“Turnip Townshend” An English lord who had also been an important politician. He was also a wealthy land owner, which most members of parliament. Had a great interest in agriculture. When retired he devoted himself to making farms on the estate able to bring in more money. Discovered if you grow turnips, barley, grasses and wheat all in rotation. Turnips one year, second year barley, grasses third year and forth year wheat and then your repeat it again four times as many crops could be produced. Land did not need to be fallow to let the nutrients keep up because the new crops of turnips and clover released nitrogen into the soil. In extension, turnips and clovers could be used as non expensive fodder during the winter time to feed the animals. This made it a lot easier to build and continue marinating large amounts of herds. The enclosure, improved animal breeds, cultivation, fertilization, careful seeding, and crop rotation, this all made farming more productive and increased money flow. The agriculture of France and European countries wear backward in comparison.

Development and how it affected people With enclosure, the population of many towns grew very quickly, primarily in England an area called “ the Midlands.” Towns like Manchester and Liverpool used to be a quite sleepy little towns, now since the advancement in farming and agriculture are big busy cities, filled with many farming families who no longer had farms. The growth of the town and cities increased the amount of food and made it possible for fewer farmers to feed large city population. Starting with using hands to plant seeds, plow the land and picking the plants Turned into using a machine pulled by horses which plowed the land then plant the seeds, but you still picked the after product. Wealthy people helped and made it possible so that farming was so advanced so not many people needed to farm People had time to build buildings, make other ways of profit with other professions. Buildings grew and the population expanded and everything advanced to instead of using horses, we use cars or buses.
