3 I. Reading skill -- Reading for Denotation and connotation

4 1.How to find out the key idea? Both denotation and connotation refer to the meanings of words. Denotation is the literal meaning of a word --- what you find in a dictionary. Connotation, on the other hand, is the implied meaning of a word --- what a word suggests to you, or what it makes you feel or think. For the word “die”, for example, the denotation is “stop living”. But in the sentence “Some die at 30 but are not buried until they’re 70”, the word “die” connotes “Stop living spiritually” or “stop growing intellectually”.

5 2.Practice Find out the denotations and connotations in these sentences from section B. The mechanic couldn’t resist a parting joke. Denotation: fight against. Connotation: could not help but make. It’s implied that the mechanic was fond of making jokes and that the mechanic and the “I” enjoyed a good relationship.

6 Our engine roared to life, the powerful jet turbines making noise to waken the dead. Denotation: give a continuing sound Connotation: started to work suddenly and with full energy. The engine is compared to a person who is brought suddenly to an active state from an inactive one. I expected the ride of my life, and with good reason. Denotation: a trip on horseback, in a vehicle, or on any other thing that carries Connotation: a pleasant, longed-for journey. Here the difficult flight is compared to a journey full of excitement and pleasure. BackBack
