3 Leading In  Do you have any dreams?  a scientist a doctor a lawer or a worker

4 Leading In  How will you make your dream come true?  First, you must believe it can come true  Where there is a will, there is a way.  Then, you have to try your best.  No pain, no gain

5 New Words  Violin: n. a four-stringed wooden musical instrument. guitarpiano

6 New Words  mention:  n. the act of mentioning.  There are a couple of points worthy of mention.  v. tell about something in a few words, spoken or written.  She loses her temper every time I mention the stock market.

7 New Words  aim: n.  (1) the desired result of one ’ s efforts, intention or purpose  What is your aim of learning Japanese?  (2) the act of directing a weapon  The hunters took aim at the bear together.

8 New Words  aim: v. point or direct towards some object, especially with the intention of hitting it  I saw all the soldiers aiming at me.

9 Phrases  bring up  (1) to educate and care for int eh family until grown-up  To bring up children is not an easy job.  (2) to raise or introduce (a subject)  He would bring up the question of loan at the meeting.

10 Phrases  Provide for: support; supplywith the things necessary for life  He provides for his family by working in a factory  You have no duty to provide for them since they have grown up.

11 Phrases  Insist upon/on: order or demand  I insisted on my correctness.  They insisted on my staying there for supper

12 Phrases  Run into  (1) meet somebody by chance  Guess who I ran into today.  (2) get into (difficulties, problems, etc.)  When I ran into a problem, I ’ d ask Tom for help

13 Phrases  get … out of: gain something from  You will get pleasure and knowledge out of the trip.  learn … from  pick up … from

14 Phrases  break away from: escape suddenly from; leave a party, state, organization, etc.  The thief broke away from the prison.  Children are supposed to break away from their family when they grow up.

17 Text A Life in a Violin Case  Leading a life as a violinist. This text is about the author ’ s life as a musician and how he enjoys this kind of life.  The structure of the text is following:

18 Text A Life in a Violin Case  At the beginning of the text, the author briefly tells us about his “ personal history ”.  It is because his grandfather,who took music as an occupation, earned barely enough to provide for the family that the author ’ s parents insisted that he should not go into music as a career.

19 Text A Life in a Violin Case  The author then tells us that he had to go into business to help his family out of their money problems, but later, he was finally able to go abroad to study music with the money he had saved.  He describes his own feelings, both when he worked in business and when he was studying music.  For example :

20 Text A Life in a Violin Case  A time in my life that I feel was wasted.  It was just not for me.  Money is all I got out of it.  Life was passing me by.  Enjoyed every minute of it.  I walked on air.  I really lived.

21 Text A Life in a Violin Case  In the last part of the text, the author expresses his opinion on the major topic in the text: should a person take up a job for money or insist on doing what he/she likes. For the author himself, he chose the second one.  What is your opinion?

23 Details  Despite being greatly respected in the community, he earned barely enough to provide for his large family.  Meaning: Though he was greatly respected by other people in his area, he earned so little that he was almost unable to supply his large family with what they needed for life.

24 Details  As a consequence of this example in the family, the very mention of music as a career carried with it the idea of an uncertain existence.  Meaning: Because my grandfather had set a negative example for the family, if anyone ever talked about taking up music as a career, the others would think immediately that meant you ’ d have to live without a stable income.

25 Details  My parents insisted upon college instead of music school, and so to college I went.  Meaning: My parents demanded that I go to college rather than to music school, and so I went to college.

26 Details  Before I knew it, I had begun my career in business-a time in my life that I feel was wasted.  Meaning: I had already taken up business as a career before I realized it, and now I feel that the period of time I spent doing business was wasted.

27 Details  I stayed four years, worked harder than I had ever dreamed of working before, and enjoyed every minute of it.  Meaning: I stayed in Europe for four years, worked harder than I had ever thought I would, and enjoyed every minute of my life when I was studying music.

28 Details  If I had stayed in business, I might be a really wealthy man today.  Meaning: If I had continued to work in business, I might be a really rich man now.  Subjunctive mood  This situation does not exist in reality.

29 Details  So conditioned are most of us to the idea that success is money —— so much so that the thought of giving up a good salary for happiness seems foolish.  Meaning: Most of us are used to thinking that a person is successful only if he has money. We are so convinced that we think it foolish to give up a well-paid job just for happiness.
