Adding and Subtracting Integers CCSS.6.NS. 5, 6, 7, 8: Apply and extend previous understanding of numbers to the system of rational numbers. Materials: pencil, journal, glue your quiz into your Journal and head a clean page. Please write your name on the Arctic Lights, Arctic Nights WS and place it in a neat pile in the middle of each group. I will be collecting it for a grade. Then copy your Agenda for the week.

Rules for Adding and Subtracting Integers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6EWq9EZmIKg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6EWq9EZmIKg ADDING INTEGERS WITH THE SAME SIGN:  Add the absolute values and use the common sign. 1. Ex. 10 + 14 = 24 2. Ex. -7 + (-5) = -12 ADDING INTEGERS WITH A DIFFERENT SIGN:  Subtract the lesser absolute value from the greater absolute value and use the sign of the integer with the greater absolute value. 1. Ex. 13 + (-9) = 4 2. Ex. -11 + 6 = -5 OPPOSITES:  The sum of an integer and its opposite is zero. 1. Ex. -4 + 4 = 0

Let’s try it out! 1. -8 + (-2) 2. 8 + 2 3. -9 + 5 4. 4 + (-15) 5. 12 + (-3) + 13 + (-5)

Rules for Adding and Subtracting Integers TO SUBTRACT AN INTEGER ADD ITS OPPOSITE, then apply adding integers rules. 1. Numbers Ex. 5 – 7 = 5 + (-7) 2. Algebra Ex. a – b = a + (-b)

Let’s try it out! Remember…to subtract an integer, add its opposite and then use the rules for adding integers. 1. 2 – 7 2. - 6 – 8 3. 12 – (-9) 4. -10 – (-5) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2IW9FolSnc

Human-Interactive Number Line  Start at zero. Move to the first number in the number sentence.  Then, if adding face to the right. If the addend is positive, move forward. If it is negative, back up.  Start at zero. Move to the first number in the number sentence.  Then, if subtracting face to the left. If the subtrahend is positive, move forward. If it is negative, back up.  Try it! 8 + (-3)8 + 3-8 + 3-8 + (-3) - 8 – (-3)8 – 3-8 – 3-8 – (-3)  Does this always work? Let’s test it with a group activity.  How can you use this process with a pencil and paper number line?

Homework  Watch the National Championship game and root for the Oregon Ducks!!
