TRIVIA (?) Why are plants green in spring/summer and brown in autumn?

Photosynthesis Objectives: The students will describe how chlorophyll uses different lights for photosynthesis. The student will analyze absorbed and reflected lights by looking satellite images sensed with green, red and near infrared sensors.

Photosynthesis  Chlorophyll pigments absorb sunlight in order to get energy.  Do they absorb all of the sunlight?

How do plants use sunlight? Chlorophyll pigments absorb 90% of the Red and Blue lights or energy. Reflect back about 20 % Green light …… Reason why we see them green!

What can satellites see? Satellite electromagnetic sensors let us see beyond the visible...

How do imaging satellites work? “satellite eyes” or sensors

Remote Sensing Images human eye satellite “eyes”

Questions  Do you think plants are the only “thing” that absorb and reflect different lights?  How does pure water use light? (take a guess!)

How does a satellite image look like?

 Why are plants green in spring/summer and brown in autumn?

Assessment - Survey 1- Do you like this kind of activities where a new technology is apply? 2- What would you change in this activity? 3- What do you think worked well? 4-Would you like to know more about satellite technology and applications?

Assessment Results Question #2 - Student’s comments: Colors More questions Directions/software 6 3 7 Question #3 - Student’s comments: Work in groups. Match their curve with the “model”. Work with computers. Everything
