5 1) What was the Space Race?  The “race” to be the country noted for sending the most astronauts and satellites to space and explore the moon.

6 2) Who was the president during the Space Race?  President John F. Kennedy

7 3) On what date did he make his famous speech?  May 25, 1961

8 4) What was the famous speech? (Write It)  “I believe that the nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the Earth. NO single project in this period will be more impressive to mankind, or more important for the long range exploration of space.”

9 5) Why did his speech take everyone by surprise?  It took everyone by surprise because Americans had never even sent an astronaut or satellite into orbit, not to mention the moon!

10 6) What was the American response to Kennedy’s challenge?  The Kennedy Space Center was built in Florida and Mission Control was established in Houston, Texas.

11 7) Who was the First American to orbit Earth?  In Feb. 1962, almost one year later, John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth.

13 9) Why did NASA develop the space shuttle program?  The rockets they were using were huge and expensive and could only be used once.

14 10) Define space shuttle.  A reusable space vehicle that takes off like a rocket and lands like an airplane.

16 12) What caused the Challenger space shuttle tragedy?  The booster rocket on the space shuttle exploded just after takeoff, killing all seven onboard.
