The term describes a progressive decline in memory or other cognitive functions that interferes in the ability to perform your usual daily activities. (2013, April 26).  Approximately 3.4 million individuals aged 71 and older in the United States have dementia. And an estimated 5.3 million Americans of all ages have Alzheimer’s disease. (2013, April 26). In types of Dementia nerve cells begin to increasingly deteriorate and die. Without nerve cells to transfer information throughout the brain there are no memories, thoughts, or skills. (2010)

(2010)  When Dementia is recognized in a person under the age of 65, these conditions are referred to “young-onset” or “early- onset” Dementia/Alzheimer’s. (2010)  Less than 1% of Alzheimer’s disease cases are caused by rare genetic variations found in a small number of families worldwide. (2010)

There are approved by FDA drugs that will help in temporarily slowing the worsening of symptoms for about six to twelve months. (2010)  Some data indicate that management of cardiovascular risk factors avoid or delay mental decline. (2010)  Around the clock care is needed when the person cannot be left alone because of risk of wandering, getting lost, and other unsafe activities. (2010)  Family and other unpaid caregivers of people with Alzheimer’s or another dementia are more likely than non-caregivers to have high levels of stress hormones, reduced immune function, slow wound healing, new hypertension and new coronary heart disease. (2010)  People with Alzheimer's can lose track of dates, seasons and the passage of time. They may have trouble understanding something if it is not happening immediately. This number will double by 2030 and more than triple by 2050. (2012, April 1)  The high cost of the disease will challenge health systems to deal with the predicted future increase of cases. The costs are estimated at US$ 604 billion per year at present and are set to increase even more quickly than the prevalence. (2012, April 1)

They may stop in the middle of a conversation and have no idea how to continue or they may repeat themselves. (2014, January 1)

(2014, January 1)  The mood and personalities of people with Alzheimer's can change. They can become confused, suspicious, depressed, fearful or anxious. They may be easily upset at home, at work, with friends or in places where they are out of their comfort zone. (2014, January 1)  A person with Alzheimer's may start to remove themselves from hobbies, social activities, work projects or sports. (2014, January 1)
