South Gloucestershire Adult Mental Health and Wellbeing Needs Assessment-Key findings and next steps South Gloustershire Health and Social Care Voluntary Sector Network Meeting 23 July2015

The mental health landscape in South Gloucestershire At a whole population level mental health outcomes in SG are good Good performance on wider determinants of mental health and risk factors for mental health (e.g. unemployment, homelessness, crime). Good acute crisis response to people with mental health problems However, there are other areas where we need to do better

Particular groups in SG are at high risk of mental ill health Priority Neighbourhoods Unemployed Prisoners Gypsy/Travellers People with long term conditions People with disabilities Victims of domestic abuse LGBT group Substance misusers- drugs and alcohol Smokers

Demand for services Demand for services will increase at least in keeping with population growth Increased demand and waiting lists for talking therapies (especially 1 to 1 support) Problems with provision of long term support following talking therapies Increasing demand for community and inpatient services Historically, there has been low investment in mental health in SG compared with England

Access to services People with autism face long delays to access diagnostic assessment People in SG with learning disabilities are less likely to receive community or day care services than the rest of England Lack of provision for people with sub threshold mental health conditions particularly mild anxiety & depression

Service user feedback Widespread stigma and discrimination (from individuals and employers) More information needed on mental health services and community support. Need for more peer support groups Lack of consistent care co-ordination and joint working between agencies. Inadequate post crisis follow up. Lack of consistency in GP support.

Next steps Development of strategy and action plan over next 4– 6 months Three subgroups based on the WHO model (mental health promotion, mental illness prevention, treatment and rehabilitation) Each group will include a Chair & service user rep Crosscutting themes- communication, workforce development, service user and carer involvement, agreed local indicators to measure impact Identification of subgroup members

The WHO model of Public Mental Health Treatment and rehabilitation Mental illness prevention Mental health promotion

Recommendations for the Health & Wellbeing board To endorse the findings of the needs assessment To agree with the proposed process for development for the new mental health strategy.
