2 MAIN IDEA AND SUPPORTING DETAILS A. Directions: Fill in the blanks to make complete sentences that will help you remember the terms. 1.The topic of a work of nonfiction is what the text is about. It is usually expressed in a couple of word. 2.The main idea is the most important statement about a topic that the writer wants to convey 3.A topic sentence is a statement of the main idea of a paragraph or section of text 4.Supporting details include facts, examples, sensory details, incidents, and statistics 5.The function of supporting details is to back up or support the main idea 6.A main idea might be stated or implied. 7.Taking notes can help readers remember main ideas 8.Ways to take notes include formal outlines, bulleted lists, graphic organizers 9.When readers take notes, they should determine what information is most important and then restates it in their own words B. Directions: Use the boxes to draw visual reminders of common note- taking methods, such as graphic organizers or outlines.

3 Outline Activity Your group will be given a blank out line and some sentence strips. Work as a group to fill in the outline. After it has been checked by a teacher, you may glue the pieces down. Pick one person from your group to present your outline.

5 Homework We will read “The Spider Man behind Spider-Man” tomorrow. You will need to do the vocabulary sheet tonight and be prepared to discuss the words tomorrow. This vocabulary sheet will be for a grade and could easily bring up or drop the grade that goes on your report card next week. This will be the last grade for this 9 weeks.
