Treatment Program Alumni Services Coming of Age: Beyond the Picnics 39 th International Winter Symposium Harmony Recovery in the Rockies® Community & Alumni Relations Office Marvin Ventrell, JD Director

The Mission of Alumni Services Fund Development? Cultivating Referral Sources? Visibility Source? Promoting Fellowship?

Alumni Service as a Component of Treatment Mission We should view Alumni Service as a Substantive Component of the treatment process Then, Alumni Service Mission becomes the same as the mission of treatment “To Provide the Means of Recovery from the Disease of Addiction”

Continuum of Care Model Justifies this Approach Lesson of past decades: Addiction is a Chronic Disease Characterized by Relapse Recovery is an Ongoing Process Success is Dependent of Continuum of Care AND Alumni Services provide an ideal, if not the best, mechanism we have for ongoing care communication and service delivery

Moving from Entertainer to Recovery Service Provider So we need to build structures that allow for effective service delivery Traditional Collegiate Alumni Model may not be the best model anymore It’s mission is not continued primary purpose. i.e. education (education is not a chronic disease) Our model building starts with Disease and Recovery concepts

Addiction is a Chronic Disease ASAM Definition Addiction is a primary, chronic disease of brain reward, motivation, memory and related circuitry…. ….characterized by inability to consistently abstain, impairment in behavioral control, craving, diminished recognition of significant problems with one’s behaviors and interpersonal relationships, and a dysfunctional emotional response. Like other chronic diseases, addiction often involves cycles of relapse and remission. Without treatment or engagement in recovery activities, addiction is progressive and can result in disability or premature death.

Recovery: SAMHSA Definition 2011 A process of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live a self- directed life, and strive to reach their full potential…. Recovery emerges from hope. Recovery is person-driven. Recovery occurs via many pathways. Recovery is holistic. Recovery is supported by peers and allies. Recovery is supported through relationship and social networks. Recovery is culturally-based and influenced.
