2. Look it up! Da Vinci, Leonardo Leonardo da Vinci (1452—1519) was an Italian painter, inventor, musician, engineer and scientist. Da Vinci was born in the countryside. From an early age, he showed great intelligence and artistic ability. As he grew older, he learnt to do many different things. His paintings are very famous, and one, the Mona Lisa, is perhaps the most famous painting in the world. He also had many inventions. For example, his notebooks include some interesting drawings of flying machines. (See Art)

3. Dinosaurs Dinosaurs lived on Earth more than 60 million years before human beings. They lived everywhere on Earth. Some dinosaurs were as small as chickens. Others were as big as ten elephants. Some could even fly. Many dinosaurs ate plants. However, some dinosaurs liked to eat meat. Dinosaurs lived on Earth for more than 150 million years. Then, suddenly, they all died out. Nobody knows why. However, we can learn about them from their fossils. (See Earth history) Look it up!

4. Language points 1. be born 意为 “ 出生 ” ，常用于过去时。 be born in 后面常跟地点、年（月）份； be born on 后面常跟某一天。 Peter was born in Shanghai on 27 August 1998. 2. From an early age, he showed great intelligence and artistic ability. 很小的时候，他就展现出超凡的智慧和艺术才能。 3. The most famous painting 意为 “ 最有名的画作 ” 。这里应用的形容词 最高级形式。 Sam is the tallest boy in our class. This is the most interesting film I’ve ever seen.

5. Language points 4. human being 人 复数形式是 human beings ， 也可说作 human ， 复数是 humans 。 5. as…as 中间加形容词或副词，表示 “ 和 …… 一样 ……” 的意思. Tom is almost as tall as me. I did the job as well as he did. 6. die out 灭绝，消失 Every year, many animals and plants die out.

6. 7. Learn about 意为 “ 了解，得知 ” 。 learn 与 learn about 区别： learn 表示 “ 学习，学会 ” 的意思，而 learn about 表示 “ 了解，学到关于 …… 的内容 ”. I learn many subjects at school. 我在学校学习很多科目。 I learnt about the history of England at the museum. 我在博物馆里了解到 了英国的历史。
