13 The Narodna Odbrana, 1911 A secret, patriotic society, 'Defense of the People', was founded in Serbia in 1908. Members of this group would later form a secret organization known as the “Black Hand.” The group’s goal was to strengthen a spirit of nationalism. Goals of the “Defense of the People,” “….Our first goal is to increase the power of the Serbian nation and to eliminate of the hated Austrio- Hungarian empire from our borders. Austria-Hungary wants to take our freedom and our language from us and to crush us. The Serbian people are faced by the question 'to be or not to be?' …We desire heroes to stand up and challenge the people who wish to crush us. The “Defense of the People,” the Narodna Odbrana, then clearly and loudly states to the world that Austria Hungary is our first and Greatest enemy.”
